Senior Backend Developer Java/Python (m/f/d)

What You’ll Do

We have a small, fast-moving engineering team, and right now, there is a gap between the speed of AI-driven development and the quality bar that production systems require.

Your job is to close that gap.

You will review, refactor, and harden backend services, set architecture standards, enforce testing and security practices, and make sure what gets deployed is reliable, maintainable, and built to last. Java is your primary home. Python is a language you can confidently read, review, and refactor, but you are not expected to be a Python specialist.

• Implement, review and refactor backend code from a fast-moving engineering team with a focus on product standards & integration, maintainability, and production readiness.
• Design and enforce backend architecture standards, in Java and Python.
• Implement security best practices
• Set the quality bar through code reviews, testing standards, and engineering documentation.
• Contribute to architecture decisions and help the team build systems that scale.

What You’ll Bring

• 5+ years building and operating production backend systems.
• Java (Spring Boot) as your primary language — you're deeply comfortable here.
• Python as a confident second language — you can read, review, and refactor it.
• A track record of improving code quality in fast-moving environments — you've inherited codebases and made them better.
• PostgreSQL knowledge: query optimization, indexing, transactions, migrations.
• Solid grasp of distributed systems fundamentals: retries, idempotency, concurrency, async processing, resilience patterns.
• Strong security mindset: OAuth2/OIDC, Spring Security, OWASP principles, privacy-by-design.
• Strong CI/CD and testing culture — you write tests and you make others write tests.
• Able to bring structure and standards to a codebase that moves quickly.
• Excellent written and spoken English.

Nice to Have

• Experience in regulated industries — Legal Tech, FinTech, HealthTech, or similar. You understand what compliance-aware engineering looks like in practice. Candidates with this background are strongly preferred.
• Experience working alongside AI or ML teams.
• Russian language skills — genuinely useful given parts of our team, but not required. Working language is English.
• German language skills.
