Senior Electrical Systems Engineer (BESS)

In this role you will lead hardware design and development for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and UPS, contributing to power conditioning core technologies. You’ll work within ABB’s Critical Power product group to drive innovation, validation, and on-site commissioning, shaping the technology roadmap and ensuring safe, compliant delivery. You’ll collaborate across R&D, product, and customer-facing teams to resolve complex electrical challenges and improve performance and cost efficiency. This position offers hands-on engineering leadership with real impact on mission-critical energy systems. • Lead hardware design and development of BESS and UPS systems
• Analyze and validate low/medium-voltage energy management, protection schemes, power quality, and storage integration
• Perform electrical design activities including cable/harness layout, protection devices, sensors, and power supplies
• Conduct functional, performance, and safety testing adhering to IEC/UL standards
• Develop and maintain technical documentation (test procedures, commissioning guides, drawings)
• Plan and execute system commissioning on customer sites and optimize performance
• Troubleshoot electrical faults and power quality issues, advising on improvements
• Develop expertise in ABB power conditioning portfolio (BESS and HiPerGuard) and stay updated with new technologies

• 5+ years of experience designing/maintaining power electronic systems
• Strong understanding of three-phase systems and inverter/converter operation
• Knowledge of grid codes, harmonics, THD, PF, fault ride-through, and anti-islanding; familiarity with IEC/IEEE standards desired
• Foundational EMC, thermal management, and cooling/airflow knowledge
• Proficiency with AutoCAD and circuit simulation tools (PSCAD, MATLAB/Simulink) is a plus
• Ability to communicate with control engineering teams for seamless integration
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and/or Power Electronics Engineering; postgraduate qualifications desirable
