Senior Firmware Engineer (FPGA) (m/f/d) – Medical Devices

In this role you will design and implement FPGA-based firmware for advanced ophthalmic surgical systems, collaborating with hardware, software, and systems teams to deliver high-quality, regulation-compliant medical devices. You will shape firmware architecture, verification, and integration to ensure robust performance and efficient development processes. • Develop FPGA firmware architecture, requirements, and technical designs for ophthalmic surgical systems
• Design and implement FPGA firmware using VHDL and/or SystemVerilog for timing-critical functions like video processing and control logic
• Support hardware-firmware integration and collaborate with cross-functional teams for robust system performance
• Define and execute verification/validation activities while maintaining coding standards and quality gates
• Support CI/CD workflows, lab validation, AI-enabled processes, and regulatory-compliant development lifecycles

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or related field
• 6+ years of FPGA/firmware development experience
• Fluent English and intermediate German
• Residence within commuting distance to Erlangen or willingness to relocate
• Strong expertise in FPGA development using VHDL/SystemVerilog and FPGA SoCs (e.g., Xilinx)
• Experience with hardware-firmware integration, system-level debugging, and lab validation environments
• Programming skills in C/C++ and Python
• Experience in Agile/Scrum environments and collaborating with distributed teams
