Staff Attorney, German Law

• Directly represent clients in family reunification and humanitarian visa cases to Germany at embassy and court level
• Conduct intake interviews and research, develop strategies, inform clients of rights and procedures, draft submissions, and ensure follow-up and advocacy with adjudicating bodies
• Collaborate with partner NGOs and German lawyers on family reunification cases and advocacy work
• Maintain detailed and accurate records of potential and active cases
• Monitor legislative and case-law developments concerning family reunification and asylum law at European and German domestic levels
• Draft legal manuals and pro se guides for family reunification cases to Germany
• Provide training to legal practitioners
• Provide guidance to IRAP staff members and volunteers on German family reunification cases
• Participate in strategic team work, including workshops and legal-journal publications
• Report to the Supervising Attorney for Germany and work as part of a three-person team

Requirements

• Second German law degree required (2. Staatsexamen)
• Demonstrated experience providing legal assistance to refugees and/or asylum-seekers in Germany
• Experience in family reunification procedures preferred
• Sound knowledge of European and German legislative frameworks and jurisprudence regarding refugees and/or human rights
• Strong research, writing, and analytical skills
• Prior experience interviewing and counseling clients in a legal setting
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Ability to multitask and manage a high-volume workload with excellent time management
• Sensitivity to client empowerment and working with LGBTQI clients, trauma survivors, and other vulnerable populations
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Suite
• Excellent German and English communication skills required
• Other languages, particularly Arabic, Farsi, French, Somali, Swedish, and Tigrinya, are a plus but not required
