Staff Software Engineer to design, build, and operate emnify's cloud-native 5G Standalone core, taking technical ownership of core network functions and roaming scenarios. Hybrid role based in Berlin (open to candidates across Germany) focused on hands-on implementation, production operation, and setting technical direction.

Role

Staff Software Engineer focused on 5G Standalone (SA) core development and operation. You will take technical ownership of core network functions and roaming scenarios, design and implement software components, and drive technical direction across squads while staying hands‑on.

Key Responsibilities

• Architect, design, implement, test, and operate cloud-native 5G SA core components and service-based interfaces.
• Own end-to-end 5G roaming scenarios, signaling, and interworking for global IoT connectivity.
• Deploy and operate the 5G core at scale on AWS and Kubernetes with attention to high availability, observability, and performance.
• Mentor engineers, review designs, and drive decisions on protocols, network functions, and core architecture.
• Troubleshoot complex live telecommunications issues across protocols and running services.
• Use AI-agentic workflows to support design and implementation tasks.

Requirements

• Deep, hands-on expertise with 5G Standalone core specifications and signalling protocols (service-based interfaces over HTTP/2, Diameter, GTP-C/U) and roaming scenarios.
• Strong software engineering experience in at least one of: C++, Go, or Java, including architecture, implementation, testing, and troubleshooting.
• Experience with cloud-native networking, service mesh patterns, observability, and building high-throughput distributed systems.
• Experience deploying and operating large-scale infrastructure and orchestration on AWS and Kubernetes.
• Proven experience running telecommunications services at scale in production.

Nice-to-have / Bonus

• Background in IoT/M2M connectivity or MVNO/MNO core network operations.

• Hybrid position based in emnify’s Berlin office; open to candidates located anywhere in Germany. Part of the Core Network team within Engineering, collaborating across cross-functional squads.
