Overview
The Chief Sustainability Office is responsible for developing the bank’s sustainability strategy and driving its implementation across all business units, infrastructure units, and regions. This includes defining the strategic framework, coordinating sustainable banking activities, setting ESG standards, and monitoring regulatory and disclosure obligations. The office comprises four teams: Sustainability Intelligence; Strategy, Data & Implementation; Sustainable Financing & Governance; Transparency & Stakeholder Engagement.
Strategy, Data & Implementation defines the group’s sustainability strategy, collaborates with business and infrastructure units to execute strategic initiatives, and supports the bank’s transition towards a more sustainable organization with a focus on digitisation and automation of sustainability‑related processes.
Sustainability Intelligence identifies emerging sustainability topics and trends, evaluates and prioritises them, and conceptually develops them to support Deutsche Bank’s strategic positioning in sustainability.
Sustainable Financing & Governance ensures the application of ESG standards and monitors the bank’s transaction pipeline from an ESG perspective. Process stability is guaranteed through a robust control framework, and regional ESG guidelines promote consistency across subsidiaries and branches.
Transparency & Stakeholder Engagement improves transparency around the bank’s sustainability agenda and performance and facilitates dialogue with key stakeholder groups. It develops and implements the bank’s approach to materiality assessment of sustainability topics and coordinates major ESG rating inquiries.
Responsibilities
- Lead strategic development and end‑to‑end automation of central sustainability processes within the CSO, ensuring scalability and regulatory compliance (e.g., classification of sustainable‑finance transactions, Environmental & Social Due Diligence).
- Design and evolve new frameworks and standards (e.g., Transition Finance Framework), ensuring suitability for digitisation, data quality, and operational implementation.
- Act as technical steward for group‑wide IT developments with sustainability focus, prioritise initiatives, decide on technical dependencies, and oversee cross‑functional execution.
- Drive international, complex projects at the intersection of CSO, Technology, Data & Innovation and business/infrastructure units, owning delivery, roadmaps, and stakeholder alignment.
- Establish and scale AI use cases in a sustainability context within CSO, assess business value and feasibility, and lead pilot and rollout in partnership with TDI.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree with a focus on business, technology, data or sustainability, plus several years of experience in management consulting, digitisation, sustainability‑related transformation programmes, or international project/programme management.
- Deep understanding of ESG, sustainable finance and relevant data landscapes; knowledge of leading ESG data providers and substantial professional experience in ESG/sustainability environments.
- Solid knowledge of core banking processes (e.g., credit, KYC).
- Strong technical and analytical skills, including advanced Excel and programming (especially Python); capable of evaluating complex data models, frameworks, and digital architectures.
- Strategic thinking, independence, and decisive action under time pressure; excellent analytical, conceptual and solution‑oriented working style.
- Ability to communicate complex matters to senior management and other stakeholders, structure content clearly, and manage stakeholder relationships effectively.
- Experience managing multiple parallel projects, setting priorities, and negotiating with diverse stakeholder groups.
- Interdisciplinary collaboration and proactive shaping of sustainability‑related innovations within transformation initiatives.
- Fluency in German and English and comfort in an international context.
