Overview

AWS is launching its inaugural European Sovereign Cloud (ESC) and seeks experienced systems engineers with cloud operations experience to lead and operate high‑availability services such as EC2, S3, Dynamo, Lambda and Bedrock for EU customers. The role involves building and managing operations and development teams across AWS Utility Computing, working closely with global AWS teams, and shaping the evolution of AWS services and technology.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the launch of the ESC in 2025 and ensure scalable, high‑availability services for EU customers.
• Lead operations and development teams dedicated to delivering daily‑operations improvements for ESC services.
• Improve availability, reliability, latency, performance and efficiency of ESC.
• Collaborate with technology leaders and AWS teams to shape AWS services and technology.
• Participate in on‑call rotations to resolve incidents out‑of‑hours.

Eligibility Requirements

• Fluency in written and spoken English.
• National of an EU member state and residing in the EU.
• Relocation within the EU supported by Amazon if needed.
• Availability to participate in an on‑call rota.

Day in the Life

You will operate and improve one of the largest software systems, reviewing operational health weekly, investigating anomalies, writing actionable bug reports, executing change‑management procedures, resolving backlogs, creating scripts, and occasionally working on‑call rotations.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science (or related IT discipline) or equivalent industry experience.
• Knowledge or experience in scripting (Bash, Python or Ruby) or software development (Java, TypeScript or similar), and Linux and networking fundamentals.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience operating services in AWS or other cloud environments.
• Experience operating 24x7 high‑availability distributed software applications, performance tuning and monitoring frameworks such as CloudWatch, Datadog, Grafana or Elastic.
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code (CDK, CloudFormation, Puppet, Chef, Ansible).
