Job Description

Hydrogen's growing importance as a sustainable energy carrier highlights critical challenges in storage, particularly the behavior of elastomer seals in high‑pressure systems. Due to hydrogen's small molecular size, these seals (e.g., O‑rings) are highly susceptible to Rapid Gas Decompression (RGD) failures following pressure drops (≥ 100 bar).

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and validate a custom high‑pressure test rig designed for operation up to 1000 bar to investigate the deformation behavior of elastomeric sealing materials under RGD conditions.
  • Collaborate on the implementation and adaptation of electronic test rig control.
  • Acquire and analyze experimental data, utilizing an inline camera system to capture O‑ring projected area changes during tests and analyze results that demonstrate differentiation of elastomer materials (EPDM, VMQ, FKM) under RGD.
  • Establish a foundation for future investigations into elastomer performance under extreme hydrogen conditions.

Qualifications

  • Education: Studies in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Automation Engineering, or comparable fields.
  • Experience & Knowledge: Practical experience with industrial automation, PLC programming (especially Structured Text), or TwinCAT 3, and with experimental setups and data analysis.
  • Personality & Working Practice: Structured, methodical, and hands‑on approach to troubleshoot hardware and software challenges; strong communicator, both verbally and in writing; capable of working independently and as part of a team.
  • Work Routine: On‑site presence required.
  • Enthusiasm: Interest in sustainable energy.
  • Languages: Very good in English and German.

Additional Information

Start: According to prior agreement.

Duration: 6 months.

Requirement for this thesis: enrollment at university.
