Communications Technician

The Communications Technician is responsible for the planning, layout, and complete installation of new and retrofit communications equipment and systems in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes, and industry standards. This includes conducting site surveys, pulling cable, terminating and testing both copper and fiber‑optic cable to the highest level of specifications, and installing ancillary communications systems.

Clearance Requirement

Applicants selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements including U.S. citizenship for access to classified information. Applicant must have a Top‑Secret clearance.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Install category‑rated copper and fiber‑optic cable.
  • Terminate and test horizontal copper cabling.
  • Terminate fiber‑optic cable via anaerobic, mechanical, and fusion splicing.
  • Terminate and splice copper riser cable.
  • Install panels, enclosures, and electronics.
  • Label communication systems including cable, panels, and electronics.
  • Install interior conduit and surface‑mount raceway systems.
  • Read and understand plans and specifications.
  • Install plywood, racks, and cabinets.
  • Install cable trays within communication rooms.
  • Mentor apprentices.
  • Assist in outside‑plant (OSP) installations.
  • Pull cable 100 pair or smaller unassisted.
  • Install prefab assembly unassisted.
  • Participate in job‑site cleanup.
  • Maintain a clean work area.
  • Install ENT conduit, surface‑mount raceways, wall and floor sleeves.
  • Install pull and junction boxes up to 24" × 24".
  • Troubleshoot and fix communication cable issues.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED with 3 years of experience.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from the job site.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to read and understand plans and specifications.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license to operate equipment (training provided).
  • Subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements, including U.S. citizenship; Applicant must have a Top‑Secret clearance.

Desired Skills

  • Willingness to work in different countries for up to 6 months out of the year and travel within the United States.
  • Prior experience in communications work including room build‑out, Cat6, Cat6A and fiber‑optic termination, interpretation and maintenance of drawings and as‑builts.
  • Test, troubleshoot, and repair copper and fiber‑optic cabling.
  • Familiarity with BlueBeam, Fluke Versiv, MS Office Word, and Excel.

Abilities

  • Lift, carry, and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Relocate a 12‑foot stepladder without assistance.
  • Work at various heights up to 60 feet and climb and maintain balance on scaffolds, aerial lifts, catwalks, and all types of ladders.
  • Walk, climb, lift, squat, crawl, kneel, push, pull, and reach overhead on a routine and repetitive basis.
  • Possess good vision (corrected vision may be used), the ability to see in color, and the ability to hear and communicate in English.
  • Use a standard ladder without exceeding the weight limit while carrying tools.
  • Identify when something is wrong or likely to go wrong without solving the problem.
  • Apply general rules to specific problems to produce meaningful answers.
  • Combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions, including finding relationships among seemingly unrelated events.
  • See details at close range (within a few feet).
  • Listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words.
