Stellenbeschreibung:

two PhD Positions (all genders welcome)

The group of Prof. Dr. Sven Schneider at the Faculty of Chemistry, University of Göttingen, is currently inviting applications for two PhD Positions (all genders welcome).

Salary: group 13 TV-L, 60 %, i.e. 23.88 h/week. Both positions are available starting , limited to three years, and are located at the Institute for Inorganic Chemistry.

PhD Position 1

You will work on a PhD project about late transition metal species with subvalent ligands, such as metallonitrenes, carbenes, and related targets. The project includes the development of synthetic routes towards suitable molecular precursors, the photochemical generation of the transient target species, and trapping with suitable substrates. Particular focus will lie on the (electronic) structure determination by in‑situ spectroscopic methods in solution (UV/vis, IR, EPR) and in solid state (crystal‑to‑crystal XRD experiments) and its correlation with chemical reactivity. Further experimental and computational methods will be carried out with external collaborators and within the framework of the RTG 2455 Benchmark experiments for numerical quantum chemistry.

PhD Position 2

You will work on a PhD project on the encapsulation of molecular nitrogen fixation catalysts in supramolecular cage compounds. The project aims at examining the impact of the supramolecular host, such as charge and cavity size, on the thermodynamics and kinetics of proton‑coupled electron transfer (PCET) steps at the catalytic site. You will develop synthetic routes to the supramolecular cage compounds and anchoring strategies for the molecular catalyst hosts. PCET will be examined by suitable analytical methods, such as electrochemistry, calorimetry, and kinetic experiments. Further experimental and computational methods will be carried out with external collaborators and within the framework of the CRC 1633 Pushing Electrons with Protons.

Requirements

Candidates for both positions hold a university master’s degree in chemistry with profound knowledge in the synthesis of transition metal compounds under an inert atmosphere. Furthermore, experience in applying the analytical methods required for the respective projects and in supramolecular chemistry for PhD position 2 are required. As a successful candidate, you are expected to participate in the structured doctoral program of the University of Göttingen, present your work at national and international conferences, and publish in peer‑reviewed international journals. Very good English language skills in writing and speaking are required; German language skills are desirable.

The University of Göttingen is an equal opportunity employer and places particular emphasis on fostering career opportunities for women. Qualified women are therefore strongly encouraged to apply in fields in which they are underrepresented. The university has committed itself to being a family‑friendly institution and supports employees in balancing work and family life. The University aims to employ a greater number of severely disabled persons. Applications from severely disabled persons with equivalent qualifications will be given preference.
