It serves over 78,000 students through a blended-learning model. The LEAD:FUH project (Learning Empowerment through Analytics and Data) anchors learning analytics across the university's teaching and study operations, funded by the Stiftung Innovation in der Hochschullehre, with a project run until the end of 2029.### The roleThe position sits within the Zentrum Digitalisierung und IT (ZDI) and is fixed-term until 31 December 2029, full-time at 39.83 hours per week, graded up to Entgeltgruppe E 13 TV-L depending on qualifications. You would work on two open-source products that must function without training, support hotlines or prior knowledge from their users. Both products are shown at conferences, to funders and to other universities, so design quality is a public-facing argument for the project's value.### What you would do* Own interface design from concept through structure and interaction to the finished browser surface, with initial focus on the learning-progress dashboards for students, teachers and study advisors.* Take over the design development of Illume, an already well-developed platform that makes data flows visible across five distinct roles (system administration, research, data protection and others), each seeing the same data graph through a different lens.* Write all UI copy for both products, including labels, microcopy, error messages, explanations, onboarding elements and notifications.* Maintain and extend the shared pattern library, a documented design system built on semantic HTML, CSS Custom Properties and native Web Components.* Apply WCAG 2.2 AA and BITV 2.0 accessibility requirements from the earliest stages of design.* Gather feedback from target user groups and translate it into grounded design decisions.* Produce visual materials for presentations, publications and conference contributions.* Work closely with software architecture and development teams, in the same repository and the same working rhythm.### What they are looking for* A bachelor's degree or higher in Interaction Design, Communication Design, Media Informatics, Human-Computer Interaction or a related field — or a relevant vocational qualification with several years of relevant professional experience.* A portfolio showing interfaces you accompanied through to live production use.* Fluent German at C2 level or above, with demonstrable experience writing user-oriented UI text.* Solid knowledge of HTML and CSS, with the ability to implement designs directly in the browser.* Confident handling of digital accessibility requirements.* Good English for documentation and exchange.* (Nice to have) Experience with information design and data visualisation, especially graph and dependency representations.* (Nice to have) Experience with learning management systems, particularly Moodle.* (Nice to have) Experience with design systems shared across multiple applications.* (Nice to have) Proficiency in at least one programming language, preferably JavaScript or TypeScript.* (Nice to have) Small-scale user research experience: interviews, usability tests, analysis.* (Nice to have) Experience contributing to open-source projects.* (Nice to have) Knowledge of the higher-education context or other heavily regulated environments.### Working arrangementsThe role is based in Hagen, Germany. The university offers extensive options for mobile (remote) working alongside the on-site position.
