W2 Professorship in Visceral Surgery and Translational Research

Reference is made to § 67 Para. 7 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG), the non‑tariff terms of employment apply, and to the conditions of employment based on § 68 HessHG. Proficient knowledge of German is expected.

Responsibilities

  • Represent the field of visceral surgery and the associated translational research within the Clinic for General, Visceral, Thoracic and Transplant Surgery in research, teaching and patient care across the entire spectrum. All tasks related to the professorship in patient care are regulated by the UKGM.
  • Conduct research focusing on investigating molecular mechanisms underlying inflammatory and regenerative processes relevant to visceral surgery, with emphasis on translational research with high clinical relevance such as wound healing, regeneration, and related molecular biological processes.
  • Build upon existing research priorities at the Giessen Campus and contribute to the university's focus area “Cardiopulmonary System (Heart/Lungs)” and the Faculty of Medicine’s accent areas “Translational Oncology”, “Reparation and Regeneration”, and “e‑Health”.
  • Actively participate in existing research consortia at JLU (Cluster of Excellence “Cardio‑Pulmonary Institute”, German Center for Lung Research, German Center for Infection Research, and Collaborative Research Center 1213 “Pulmonary Hypertension and Cor Pulmonale”).
  • Initiate new interdisciplinary research consortia and networks, collaborating with the University Center for Biomedical Informatics at JLU and the University of Applied Sciences in Central Hessen in digital medicine and big data analysis, focusing on modern information technologies and artificial intelligence.
  • Teach the clinical component of medical students’ training, introduce students to current developments in molecular biology and immunology, and foster independent scientific work.
  • Develop and conduct interdisciplinary lectures and internships, expand interprofessional training structures, and participate in the Giessen Graduate Centre for the Life Sciences, the structured graduate program JLU TRAINEE, and the clinician scientist program JLU CAREER.
  • Integrate gender aspects in research, teaching and patient care.
  • Demonstrate willingness for interdisciplinary and inter‑university collaboration within Campus research foci, participate in joint research projects and cross‑university/hospital patient‑oriented clinical research.

Qualifications

  • Successfully completed university education in medicine, outstanding doctorate in a relevant field, and excellent additional academic achievements (e.g., habilitation or internationally recognized publications).
  • Proof of special pedagogical aptitude for academic teaching in visceral surgery and translational research.
  • Experience managing an independent research group (e.g., DFG “Emmy Noether Early‑Career Research Group” or German Cancer Aid “Max Eder Early‑Career Research Group”).
  • Experience coordinating scientific projects in interdisciplinary networks and success in independent acquisition of external funding.
  • Specialist qualification in general or visceral surgery, and experience in minimally invasive (robot‑assisted) surgery.
