The Department of English and American Studies at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf invites applications for the following position, to be filled at the earliest possible date:
W3 Professorship in English Linguistics with a focus on Digital Linguistics
The successful candidate is expected to represent the full breadth of English Linguistics in both research and teaching, from both synchronic and diachronic perspectives. The teaching load is9 hours per week (Semesterwochenstunden); teaching responsibilities include contributions to the Department's and Faculty’s Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes.
The research focus lies in the fields ofcomputational sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, text linguistics and/or pragmatics in digital media, as well asBig Data and digital linguistics.
Proven expertise is desired in the development and application of computational methods for the analysis of socially determined language use in digital media; the analysis of linguistic patterns and communication strategies in online environments within the English-speaking world; the development and application of computational methods for the creation and linguistic analysis of digital corpora and databases.
Applicants must demonstrate a record of publications in internationally renowned peer-reviewed journals within the aforementioned fields and a proven track record of securing significant competitive external funding. Excellent performance in university-level teaching within English Studies—evidenced, for example, by evaluations or teaching awards is required. Candidates must demonstrate the willingness and ability to participate in German-language university self-administration. The professorship is intended to strengthen existing research priorities; active participation in interdisciplinary collaborative research projects is expected. Candidates are expected to be willing to contribute to the development of the Centre for Digital Humanities.
Applicants will be hired in accordance with the general prerequisites pertaining to service law of section 36 of the North Rhine-Westphalia University Act (Hochschulgesetz NRW) which require an aptitude for teaching, exceptional competence in research, and additional scientific achievements.
