The Leibniz-Institut für Kristallzüchtung (IKZ) in Berlin is offering a PhD position (f/m/d) on isotope-pure silicon epitaxy for quantum photonic chips. This interdisciplinary project combines epitaxial crystal growth, nanofabrication, and quantum optics in collaboration with leading European research partners, including CNRS Institut Néel and TUM Center for Quantum Engineering (ZQE).
This PhD position places you at the heart of quantum materials research, exploring the growth and nanoscale control of isotope-pure silicon (²⁸Si) for use in quantum photonic circuits.
The goal is to develop ultra‑clean silicon‑on‑insulator (SOI) structures via molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), enabling erbium (Er³⁺)-based single‑photon sources—a foundational step toward scalable quantum communication and computation.
This research merges semiconductor nanofabrication, epitaxial engineering, and quantum optics, linking material science with quantum technology innovation.
Applicants should demonstrate strong motivation for materials research and quantum device engineering. Required qualifications include:
Experience with vacuum systems, epitaxial tools, or optical spectroscopy will be considered advantageous.
The Leibniz‑Institut für Kristallzüchtung (IKZ) is a world‑leading facility specializing in crystal growth and purification for semiconductor, quantum, and photonic applications. As part of the Forschungsverbund Berlin and the Leibniz Association, IKZ offers an outstanding platform for early‑career researchers to engage in high‑impact, cross‑disciplinary research.
What you’ll gain:
This position contributes directly to advancing quantum photonic device fabrication and nanostructured semiconductor engineering. By developing isotope‑pure silicon platforms, the project aims to enhance photon coherence, quantum emitter stability, and scalability—key requirements for the next generation of quantum communication systems.
