Overview

PhD Position (m/f/x) Superconducting HTS4 Fusion at Technical University of Munich (TUM). The FRM II facility offers a PhD position (m/f/d) part-time (30h/week) in fusion-related HTS materials.

Responsibilities

  • investigate how neutron irradiation impacts the critical current, flux pinning, and overall superconducting performance of HTS functional conductors.
  • study changes in the electrical resistivity and other transport properties under neutron-induced damage.
  • conduct irradiation experiments using neutron sources and particle accelerators to simulate fusion-relevant environments.
  • employ advanced analytical techniques, such as magnetometry, resistivity measurements, and microscopy, to characterize material performance.
  • develop predictive models for the long-term behavior of HTS conductors in fusion reactors.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in physics, materials science, electrical engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong background in superconductivity and/or electrical transport phenomena.
  • Experience with experimental methods, such as transport measurements or irradiation techniques, is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of radiation effects on materials and familiarity with HTS conductors is beneficial. Good communication skills and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary and international team.
  • Proficiency in English (spoken and written); German skills are a plus but not mandatory.

Benefits

  • The appointment is initially limited to 3 years. Salary payment is based on the German pay scale TV-L, with classification in remuneration group E13 if tariff requirements are fulfilled.
