Postdoc - theoretical plasma physics (m/f/d) – location: Garching or Greifswald

The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP) is one of the world's leading centers for fusion research. With around 1100 dedicated employees in Garching near Munich and Greifswald, we are committed to exploring the fundamental principles of fusion power plants. These power plants generate energy without climate-damaging emissions, are safe, sustainable and nearly limitless - just like the sun. Fusion power plants have the potential to play an important role in supplying energy to future generations.

A Postdoc position with us means

  • You will be part of one of the largest scientific and technical projects in Germany with interdisciplinary project teams. During your Postdoc phase you can expect exciting tasks and projects in an international scientific environment. You will acquire new skills and competencies through your work, but also through further education events and will be supported in your active career planning by the Career Center for Postdocs.
  • Our postdoctoral research positions are temporary contracts, usually for 2 years with possible prolongation to 4 years. The positions are remunerated up to salary grade 13 according to the German public sector tariff (TVöD Bund).

Responsibilities

  • Explore and conduct theoretical research in plasma physics aligned with IPP topics and projects.
  • Collaborate with international teams working on large-scale experiments (ASDEX Upgrade in Garching and Wendelstein 7-X in Greifswald).
  • Contribute to scientific publications, presentations, and proposals; indicate research interests and how you would like to contribute in the cover letter.

Qualifications

  • Recent PhD or near completion in physics or a closely related field.
  • Strong plasma physics background and passion for nuclear fusion; expertise is a plus but not mandatory.
  • Clear statement in the cover letter about topics of interest and desired contribution.
