This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of Assystem. We are currently looking for a Principal Mechanical Engineer in the United Kingdom.
This role offers the opportunity to contribute to high-impact infrastructure projects, supporting the technical capabilities of major clients within critical energy sectors. The Principal Mechanical Engineer will deliver engineering excellence in design, assessment, and modification of complex mechanical systems, ensuring reliability, safety, and operational efficiency. You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams, act as an intelligent customer on safety-critical contracts, and provide evidence-based solutions for plant infrastructure. This position requires a balance of technical expertise, creative problem-solving, and strong communication skills, influencing both project outcomes and team performance in a highly regulated environment.
· Specify, produce, and assess mechanical design packages for infrastructure projects to ensure technical accuracy and compliance.
· Define reliability, operational constraints, and maintenance requirements for mechanical systems including pumps, HVAC, pressure systems, cranes, and diesel generators.
· Evaluate material conditions, ageing mechanisms, and overall design integrity to ensure safe and efficient operation of facilities.
· Promote a robust safety and security culture in all work practices, acting as an intelligent customer for safety-critical contracts.
· Develop practical, creative, and cost-effective solutions for design modifications and infrastructure improvements.
· Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders to ensure design compliance with British and international standards.
Requirements
· HNC or equivalent qualification in mechanical or relevant engineering discipline; degree-level or incorporated engineer status is desirable.
· Extensive experience in mechanical engineering, ideally in nuclear or high-hazard industries.
· Strong understanding of mechanical systems such as pumps, HVAC, cranes, pressure systems, and diesel generators.
· Proven ability to make evidence-based decisions using multiple data sources.
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders.
· Strong time management skills, able to prioritize multiple high-impact tasks effectively.
· Experience interpreting and applying British and international mechanical design standards.
