Position

Doctoral researcher (Ph.D.) positions at UTN with the topic of discrete mathematics and AI (m/f/d) - LiAS-ADM-25-01
Applied Discrete Mathematics Lab (Prof. Christoph Hertrich) currently offers a doctoral research opportunity (3 years, 100%, TV-L 13) as part of the interdisciplinary project “FoMoMath: Collaborative Foundation Models for Mathematics.”

Responsibilities

  • Conduct independent research in discrete mathematics and in developing AI for mathematical research as part of your doctoral project within the FoMoMath project.
  • Collaborate with UTN researchers, including the Fundamental AI Lab (Prof. Yuki Asano) and the Natural Language Learning and Generation Lab (Prof. Steffen Eger).
  • Present research findings at international conferences and publish in high-impact journals.
  • Contribute to teaching activities in mathematics and computer science.
  • Engage in the academic life of the involved research groups and the university.
  • Support outreach activities and engage in science communication.

Your profile / Qualifications

We expect:

  • An excellent Master’s degree in Mathematics, Theoretical Computer Science, or a closely related discipline.
  • Strong interest in discrete mathematics.
  • Enthusiasm for AI in general and applying AI to mathematical research.
  • Solid programming skills (e.g., Python).
  • Very good oral and written English skills.

Advantage:

  • Experience with deep-learning tools (e.g., PyTorch) or in the development of LLMs.
  • Deeper knowledge in combinatorial optimization or polyhedral geometry.
  • Experience with formal mathematics (e.g., Lean).
