Clinical Associate in Applied Psychology

The Role

  • To work within a multidisciplinary team (or equivalent) providing evidence-based treatments for children and young people and their families. This will involve a mix of individual clinical work and involvement in the provision of group interventions.
  • To provide Psychological therapies to children and young people with a wide range of mental health problems including anxiety and depressive disorders.
  • To manage own caseload within specialty area using specialist techniques and maintain clinical records.
  • To work with psychology colleagues, and other child and adolescent mental health professionals to contribute to the provision of child and adolescent mental health services to children and young people and their families.
  • To contribute to service delivery and to participate in service evaluation within the area as directed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide assessment and treatment recommendations for children and young people with mild–moderate mental health difficulties.
  • Use child- and family-appropriate assessment measures and procedures.
  • Manage a specialist caseload of children and young people.
  • Assess predisposing and precipitating factors contributing to presenting difficulties.
  • Use psychometric tools, observation of emotional, cognitive and behavioural functioning, and self-motivating strategies.
  • Conduct assessments individually, with carers, and in group settings.
  • Develop clear formulations explaining the origin, maintenance and treatment of presenting problems.
  • Consult supervisors for complex cases prior to intervention.
  • Deliver evidence-based individual and group interventions aligned with formulations.
  • Evaluate treatment outcomes across behavioural, cognitive and emotional domains.
  • Reflect on clinical practice and engage in regular supervision.
  • Communicate formulations and psychological understanding through reports and verbal feedback.
  • Provide training and teaching to professionals, carers and relevant agencies.
  • Contribute to service development, innovation and multidisciplinary working.
  • Ensure compliance with professional, child protection and NHS standards and policies.
  • Keep management informed of service needs and relevant psychological issues.
  • Undertake research and audit with appropriate approval.
  • Maintain accurate records, reports, returns and statistical data.
  • Meet agreed PDP objectives through regular appraisal.
  • Maintain and contribute to CPD within the service and team.
  • Provide supervision to graduate psychologists when required.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job

  • The post holder must have an honours degree in psychology (eligible for GBR) and a post-graduate MSc in Applied Psychology (Healthcare) for children and young people.
  • Experience of a range of mental health conditions in children and young people and an ability to understand complex clinical presentations.
  • Experience of working within an MDT, Experience in a CAMHS setting.
  • Aware of the limits of one's competence and expertise and work within those boundaries.
  • Current driving licence or ability to travel between bases independently and timeously.
  • Ability to travel to a variety of bases across GGC as required.
  • Ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of key policy drivers in relation to mental health of children and young people.
