The Collaborative Artificial Intelligence (CAI) group at the University of Stuttgart in Germany, headed by Prof. Andreas Bulling, is inviting applications for three prestigious Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellowships.
The CAI group conducts fundamental research in collaborative artificial intelligence at the intersection of multimodal machine learning, multi-agent reinforcement learning, computational cognitive modeling, computer vision, and human-machine interaction. They have a strong presence at top conferences in these fields and are among the few truly interdisciplinary groups in Germany and Europe. The group is highly visible internationally, with publications often receiving best paper awards. Out of 14 PhD and PostDoc alumni, seven have taken faculty positions at leading institutions worldwide, with others joining industrial research labs. The group maintains close links with the International Max Planck Research School for Intelligent Systems (IMPRS-IS), the Max Planck Institute, the ELLIS Unit Stuttgart, the Centre for Bionic Intelligence Tübingen Stuttgart (BITS), and several large-scale research projects at the University of Stuttgart.
The CAI group seeks outstanding candidates with an exceptional research record and strong publications in the relevant fields. Successful candidates will pursue their own research, contribute to project leadership, advise students, and participate in teaching activities. They will have access to excellent research infrastructure, including lectures, seminars, invited talks, advanced technical equipment (e.g., eye and body motion trackers, physiological sensors, VR/AR headsets), and the group's high-performance GPU cluster.
The Fellowships are competitive, fully funded for two years, and granted directly by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation after a formal review. The process is streamlined, allowing successful candidates to start within a few weeks (excluding visa procedures). The fellowship includes a stipend, mobility allowance, health and liability insurance subsidy, a travel allowance, and an initial lump sum. A family allowance is available for partners and/or children under 18 if they stay in Germany for at least three months. German language courses are offered.
Fellows will join the global Humboldt Research Network and become eligible for alumni sponsorship after completing their research stay. The Foundation encourages applications from underrepresented groups and female junior researchers from abroad.
The University of Stuttgart is located in a scenic and economically vibrant region of Germany. It is one of Germany's top technical universities (TU9) and ranks highly worldwide. It is part of Cyber Valley, a hub for AI research, focusing on machine learning, robotics, and computer vision. The Department of Computer Science offers cutting-edge research opportunities and attracts top international students. It is well-equipped and maintains strong industry links with companies like Bosch AI, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche.
Applications should be submitted via email as a single PDF (max 10 MB), including a CV, motivation letter with research statement, publication list, transcripts, and contact details for 2-3 references. Optionally, up to five publications or theses can be included in a second PDF (max 5 MB). Applicants should specify their earliest available start date. There is no fixed deadline; applications are considered continuously over a three-year period from 2025 to 2027.
We provide updates on Cyber Valley news and events in English only.
