Join to apply for the Science and Technology Officer role at British Consulate-General Munich .

The British Consulate General in Munich is looking for a Science and Technology Officer to join the Science and Technology Network (STN). The post holder will report to the Regional Manager for Germany, Austria and Switzerland and serve as a strategic connector between STN and the UK's Department for Business and Trade (DBT).

As a member of the network, you will help shape science and technology policy in Germany and support the UK‑Germany relationship, following the signing of a historic Bilateral Treaty.

Responsibilities

  • Lead on Strategic Priorities: spearhead UK engagement in cutting‑edge fields such as Quantum and Space and drive collaboration across priority areas in Munich and Southern Germany.
  • Connect Policy and Commerce: act as a vital link between the Science & Technology Network and the UK's Department for Business and Trade, ensuring science policy supports investment and export growth.
  • Build Powerful Networks: forge and maintain relationships with government, academia, research organisations and industry leaders in the UK and Germany.
  • Deliver Insight: provide high‑quality analysis and recommendations to senior UK officials, helping to capitalise on emerging trends and opportunities.
  • Showcase UK Excellence: lead bilateral projects, visits and events to highlight the UK's world‑class science and innovation.
  • Support Senior Engagement: assist the British Ambassador and Consul General in high‑level science and technology engagements.

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in English and German (both written and spoken, minimum C1 level for the CEFR framework).
  • Degree in Science, Technology, International Relations, Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience working in science, innovation and/or technology policy within government, academia or the private sector.
  • Strong knowledge of the Munich, Bavarian and Southern German science, technology and innovation ecosystems.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain a strong and reliable network of external contacts.
  • Self‑starter with the ability to work well on own initiative.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and networking skills.
  • Very good IT skills, especially MS Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel.

Nice to Have

Contract and Benefits

This is a full‑time (37.5 hours a week) fixed‑term 2‑year contract with the possibility of a permanent contract subject to performance. Salary is €68,556 – rising to a maximum of approximately €77,009 gross per annum after a qualifying period, with performance‑related pay. Salary is non‑negotiable. Staff are recruited locally by the British Embassy and are subject to German employment law terms and conditions.

Visa and Work Permit Requirements

Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Germany and ensure that right remains throughout the contract. A valid work permit for Germany is required for non‑EU citizens.
