About the Innovation Accelerator
The Innovation Accelerator, named by Fast Company as Most Innovative Non‑Profit Organization 2021, works with start‑ups and innovations to deliver digital transformation across WFP operations, including AI, blockchain and more. The Accelerator runs programmes with partners such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Austrian Development Agency.
Role Overview
The Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Technical Solutions Consultant will join the Frontier Innovations team. The role will develop AI/ML solutions, support pilot delivery, advise stakeholders, scout and build collaborations with AI thought leaders, and travel as needed to HQ, COs, and regional bureaus.
Accountabilities / Responsibilities
- Drive responsible development of selected AI & ML software solutions from ideation to pilot implementation (TRL 5‑6) via the WFP AI Sandbox.
- Use available tools to develop lightweight prototypes to test research hypotheses.
- Develop architecture standards, templates, and principles for WFP Innovation Accelerator AI projects and present them to the WFP IT Architectural Board.
- Map solution design to WFP Enterprise Architecture standards and reference architectures.
- Collaborate with business and IT stakeholders to gather inputs, develop and document agreed solutions.
- Drive project teams through applicable operational and procurement processes and provide guidance on agile methods (e.g., Scrum, Kanban).
- Liaise with the TEC Division to provide infrastructure and access for internal and external stakeholders and vendors.
- Present technical insights on AI & ML concepts to WFP AI Sandbox peers, HQ, RBs, COs and external stakeholders.
- Advise and support WFP AI Sandbox innovation teams on decisions regarding product features, technology elements, and vendors/partners.
- Coach project teams from ideation to implementation using human‑centered design, lean start‑up, project management and SCRUM.
- Participate in discussions with colleagues in other divisions or operations to showcase AI value for humanitarian and food‑security challenges.
- Provide technical inputs to Frontier Innovation and Accelerator strategy and plans.
- Support overall Innovation Accelerator operations, including analysis & content preparation, participation in discussions on innovation topics, and support of core processes such as innovation sourcing, bootcamps, sprint programme, thought leadership, scale‑up enablement, knowledge management.
Deliverables at the end of the contract
- Ensure AI & ML technologies deliver maximum value to WFP.
- Provide sound technical advice on AI & ML topics to projects and initiatives.
- Ensure Frontier Innovations & Knowledge Management AI & ML portfolio is delivered at high quality and in‑line with WFP corporate IT standards where required.
Qualifications & Experience
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering (Applied), Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or equivalent. Master’s degree is a plus. Certifications in software architecture (e.g., CITA‑P, SOA) are also a plus.
Experience: At least 5 years in a technical role such as software development, with a minimum of 3 years in an AI or ML product management role or equivalent.
Technical Skills and Expertise
- Experience developing and implementing AI & ML solutions with foundational techniques such as NLP, computer vision, deep learning, or robotics.
- Knowledge of data analysis, preprocessing, and feature engineering techniques.
- Familiarity with cloud‑based AI services and platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and deploying models at scale.
- Experience with AI frameworks and libraries such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, Keras, spaCy, OpenCV, Hugging Face, scikit‑learn.
- Software engineering skills: version control (Git), collaborative workflows.
- Programming in Python, Java, Scala, or R.
- AI deployment and productization: deploying models in dev/test environments and integrating with existing systems or APIs.
- Knowledge of AI ethics and responsible AI practices, including bias mitigation, fairness, privacy protection, data governance, and transparency.

Languages
Fluency in oral and written English is mandatory. Intermediate knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish, or Portuguese) is a plus.
