Simulation Expert - research assistant (m/f/x)

In order to fill a fixed-term position in full-time (39.83 hours/week = 100%) at the earliest possible date, we are looking for one

Simulation Expert - research assistant (m/f/x)

The Working Group Engineering Geology and Rock Mass Mechanics at the Faculty of Geography and Geosciences focuses on issues relating to sustainable energy generation and storage, particularly in the field of geothermal energy, resource-efficient mining and post-mining utilisation, as well as radioactive waste disposal, using laboratory-based, numerical, and field-based methods.

The sustainable, safe, and efficient usage of the geological subsurface for geo-energy applications and radioactive waste disposal requires understanding of the geomechanical system behaviour. This includes processes spanning from the microscale up to the reservoir scale. We focus on bridging the gap between laboratory and field scale, by finding novel ways to accurately model physical experiments and upscale small-scale behaviour to reservoir scales. We are aiming at strengthening our numerical simulation team and announce the position of a Simulation Expert.

Scope: full-time
Duration: fixed-term, 3 years
Start: at the earliest possible date
Apply by:

  • participation in our ongoing, such as agEnS and LISAgenS, and future projects
  • numerical modelling of geomechanical systems for geo-energy and radioactive waste disposal
  • simulation of fully coupled multiscale THM-processes with COMSOL Multiphysics
  • application and development of novel numerical upscaling approaches
  • integration and development of cutting-edge numerical modelling approaches

Your profile:

  • you hold a university degree, ideally in structural geology, rock mechanics, engineering geology, geological engineering, or similar
    a PhD would be desirable.
  • you have proven, substantial experience in numerical modelling and simulation of geomechanical system behaviour, ideally in COMSOL Multiphysics
  • you have a proven track record of peer-reviewed publications and active scientific conference participations
  • experience with phase field or damage model approaches is welcomed
  • you have a good command of spoken and written Englisch
  • you are prepared to get sufficient German language skills within reasonable times to be able to interact with the other members of staff
