Specialist for Experimental Safety and Project Coordination (f/m/d)

The Safety and Radiation Protection Group (SRP) offers a diverse and engaging working environment, covering a broad range of safety topics across European XFEL. The team works at the interface between users, scientists, technical groups, and management, addressing challenges related to experimental safety, radiation protection, chemical safety, and operational processes in a complex international research facility.

For our Safety/Radiation Protection group we are looking for a

To support the increasing number and complexity of user experiments and to further develop experiment safety processes, we are seeking a specialist to join the Experiment Safety team. The position combines responsibility for the risk analysis of user experiments with active involvement in the coordination and implementation of a safety‑related project, including organizational and project management tasks. The role offers a high degree of independence, close interaction with an international user community, and the opportunity to contribute to the continuous improvement of safety structures at a large‑scale research facility.

  • Coordination of and participation in risk analyses for user experiments, with particular focus on chemical user samples and complex experimental setups
  • Advising users and internal stakeholders on safety‑related aspects during experiment preparation and execution
  • Assessing hazards, defining appropriate safety measures, and documenting results in a clear and structured way
  • Supporting the coordination of a safety‑related project, including communication between involved groups, tracking tasks, and supporting implementation
  • Acting as an interface between users, scientific staff and technical groups and safety experts from other expertises
  • Contributing to the continuous improvement of safety processes and documentation related to user operation

Required Qualifications

  • University degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, or a closely related field
  • Solid knowledge of chemical hazards, chemical safety, and handling of hazardous substances
  • Experience with risk assessment in experimental, laboratory, or industrial environments
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, particularly in advising and coordinating diverse stakeholders
  • Ability to quickly understand complex technical environments and explain them clearly to different target groups
  • Structured, reliable, and solution‑oriented working style

Preferable qualifications

  • Proficiency in German is an advantage or the willingness to acquire it
  • Experience in large research facilities or user‑operated experimental environments
  • Familiarity with regulatory frameworks in occupational and chemical safety
  • Experience in project coordination or cross‑functional collaboration
  • Intercultural competence in an international working environment
