Staff Machine Learning Engineer (f/m/d)

Orbem is an impact‑driven deep‑tech scale‑up with global reach. Founded in Munich, Germany, we have recently expanded to Houston, Texas to deliver fast, accurate, and accessible imaging solutions that push the boundaries of AI‑powered medical imaging.

As a Staff Machine Learning Engineer you will lead the design and delivery of scalable, production‑ready ML systems that move from prototype to real‑world deployment. You will partner closely with data scientists and software engineers to shape the core architecture that powers Orbem’s next‑generation technology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and implementation of ML systems.
  • Build and improve modular, scalable, and robust code for training ML models.
  • Collaborate with data scientists to train and fine‑tune ML models.
  • Optimize and troubleshoot production ML code and models, focusing on latency and memory footprint.
  • Deploy and monitor ML models in production, ensuring stability.
  • Grow production ML expertise within the team and guide best engineering practices.

Qualifications

  • Deep knowledge of PyTorch and distributed training.
  • Experience in ML system design and optimizing model architectures for efficient inference and training.
  • History of building and automating complex ML data pipelines.
  • Familiarity with production ML tools, model deployment, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Strong Python coding skills with best practices and design patterns.
  • Experience with version control, reproducible containerised environments, and cloud providers for scaling ML workflows.
  • Proven technical leadership on cross‑functional initiatives and strategic influence on long‑term technical roadmaps.
  • Strong technical judgment, balancing deep technical work with product deadlines.
  • Optional: experience with CUDA, GPUs, 3D data, healthcare ML, data privacy, federated learning.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Yearly salary €90,000‑€100,000 (fixed).
  • Equity €40,000‑€80,000 in company shares.
  • Benefits up to €5,000 annually.
  • Full‑time, hybrid (Munich, Germany).
