Overview

EMBL’s new AI initiative seeks a visionary scientist to establish an independent research group at the AI Hub Heidelberg, linking cutting‑edge machine learning methods with modern biology. The role will develop AI techniques to address fundamental questions in biology within a world‑class research environment that spans molecules to ecosystems.

Responsibilities

  • Lead an independent research group, pursuing ambitious and original projects in AI for biology.
  • Design and implement a research program that adapts and innovates AI methods to answer significant biological questions.
  • Form and manage a collaborative, interdisciplinary team, providing mentoring and fostering an inclusive research culture.
  • Engage with EMBL scientific units across Heidelberg to integrate multi‑modal data, support whole‑cell modelling, and collaborate on projects such as protein‑function prediction, regulatory networks, and precision medicine.
  • Contribute to the growth of EMBL AI by shaping future directions, publishing high‑impact research, and representing EMBL at national and international conferences.

Qualifications

  • PhD in a relevant field, with a strong record of research achievements in AI or machine learning.
  • Interest and basic understanding of AI applications to biology; prior biology experience not required but an interdisciplinary mindset is essential.
  • Demonstrated scientific excellence, vision, and the ability to develop and defend original research ideas.
  • Experience in collaborative projects, mentoring, and teamwork in a research environment.
  • Leadership potential and management skills, including strategic planning, coordination, and fostering inclusiveness.
  • Proficiency in computational research and familiarity with high‑performance computing, GPU, and data‑science infrastructure are highly desired.

  • Salary: Grade9; monthly salary from €6.659,04 (after tax, before social‑security deductions).
