We are seeking an IT Security Operations Technician to support the IT Security Section of the European Space Agency (ESA). The role delivers operational and technical support for security‑critical IT services and infrastructures, ensuring the confidentiality, integrity, availability, and business continuity of ESA’s Communication and Information Systems in compliance with ESA Security Directives.

About the client and location

The European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) is the European Space Agency’s base in Darmstadt, Germany. As the main control centre for ESA, ESOC controls the launch and early orbit phases for their missions. They are also accepted globally for their research into ground system engineering, satellite navigation, space debris studies and more.

Tasks and activities

  • Operating and supporting IT security, classified data, and infrastructure services.
  • Managing security incidents and service requests end‑to‑end.
  • Operate and maintain PAM, IAM, vulnerability management, and monitoring tools.
  • Managing and supporting Linux‑based centralised log collection platforms.
  • Ensuring log availability, integrity, retention, and access control.
  • Supporting maintenance, patching, and upgrades of servers, operating systems, appliances, and network/security devices.
  • Managing firewall, VPN, and remote access services.
  • Liaising with client and stakeholders.
  • Documentation of operational procedures.
  • Contributing to service evolution by providing feedback from operational experience to evolution projects.
  • Maintaining and upgrading hardware, software, and security/network infrastructure to agreed schedules.
  • Reporting on workload and operations and contributing to meetings to identify efficiency gains.

Skills and experience

The following skills and experience are mandatory:

  • Experience in IT operations or security operations.
  • Knowledge of Windows system administration.
  • Proven experience in Active Directory user lifecycle management.
  • Strong skills in administering and troubleshooting Linux‑based systems.
  • Good understanding of centralised logging concepts.
  • Experience with firewall/VPN technologies and remote access services.
  • Solid understanding of cybersecurity fundamentals.
  • Ability to work flexibly and adapt to changing requirements.
  • Desire to work both autonomously and as part of a team, in an international multicultural environment.
  • Eligibility to obtain a Personnel Security Clearance (PSC) up to ESA SECRET level.
  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken.

The following skills and experience would be highly desirable:

  • Experience with enterprise IT, security, and virtualisation technologies (AD, SIEM, PAM, PowerShell, VMware, ITSM, ISO 27001).
  • In possession of an IT security industry certification or technical vendor certification.
  • Technical degree (BSc, Diploma, or equivalent) from a recognised institution would be an asset.
