Laboratory - MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST or TECHNICIAN

Position Summary

Performs various chemical, microscopic, serological, hematological, and microbiological laboratory tests to obtain data used in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. The technologist will make independent decisions regarding the quality of laboratory results, use and maintain automated and manual instruments, continuously monitor result quality, write and maintain procedure manuals, comply with clinical and patient care regulations, and fulfill additional duties outlined in the phlebotomist/secretary job description.

Education

Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology or Medical Laboratory Technician Diploma.

Position Responsibilities

• Correctly collect, label, process and store clinical specimens.
• Correctly implement all laboratory procedures.
• Possess the skills necessary for performing each test method and for proper instrument use.
• Perform preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and calibration procedures related to each test performed.
• Have a working knowledge of reagent stability and storage.
• Implement quality control and assessment policies and procedures.
• Assess and verify the validity of patient test results through the evaluation of quality control values before reporting patient test results.
• Be aware of and understand the factors that influence test results.
• Perform tests in the areas of chemistry, hematology, serology, coagulation, urinalysis, and transfusion services including type, antibody screen, and crossmatch.
• Write and maintain procedures.
• Maintain accurate records and documentation.
• Manage supplies.
• Orient new employees and train students.
• Perform other related duties incidental to the work described above.
