FS Dynamics

Molecular & Fluid Dynamics Engineer

Stellenbeschreibung:

Bridge molecular science and industrial-scale engineering simulation.

FS Dynamics Hamburg is growing fast and expanding its capabilities in advanced multiphysics simulation. We are looking for an engineer who can connect fundamental molecular, chemical and physics with robust, industrially relevant CFD and Molecular Dynamics simulation methodologies.

This role is for someone who enjoys going deep: reading academic literature critically, understanding the mechanisms behind complex systems, and translating that knowledge into practical simulation workflows that help customers make better engineering decisions.

Why this role?

  • From molecular mechanisms to engineering decisions: Work at the interface between molecular-scale physics, transport phenomena, chemical processes, and continuum-scale CFD.
  • Technically demanding problems: Projects cover multiphase and reacting flows, heat and mass transfer, particle transport, surface chemistry, rarefied gas effects, plasma-related processes, micro-scale transport, and coupled multiphysics workflows.
  • Industrial impact: Your work supports development and process decisions for demanding industrial customers and leading European OEMs, with a focus on simulation quality, engineering credibility, and actionable recommendations.
  • Strong expert environment: Join a growing Hamburg team connected to a European CAE community of more than 180 engineers across Germany, Sweden, Portugal, Finland, and Norway.

What you will do

  • Develop, execute, and validate advanced CFD and Molecular Dynamics simulation workflows for industrial engineering applications.
  • Translate molecular-scale phenomena, chemical interactions, and transport mechanisms into practical CFD, MD, or coupled modelling strategies.
  • Review academic literature and advanced modelling methods; extract what is relevant; and adapt it into robust, efficient, industrially usable methodologies.
  • Simulate systems involving heat and mass transfer, multiphase flow, reacting flows, particle transport, surface chemistry, and molecular-scale transport phenomena.
  • Use MD tools such as LAMMPS, GROMACS, or comparable platforms, and connect MD insights to continuum-scale modelling where appropriate.
  • Build and refine CFD models using STAR-CCM+, ANSYS Fluent/CFX, COMSOL Multiphysics, OpenFOAM, or similar platforms.
  • Analyze results to identify physical and chemical mechanisms, assess modelling uncertainty, and provide clear engineering recommendations.
  • Balance scientific depth with industrial pragmatism: know when detailed modelling is necessary, and when a simplified but validated engineering model is better.
  • Collaborate with CFD, FEA, plasma, and system simulation experts on coupled workflows, reduced-order models, and reusable methods.

What you bring

  • M.Sc. or Ph.D. preferred in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computational Physics, Materials Science, Applied Physics, or a related discipline.
  • Strong foundation in transport phenomena, fluid dynamics, heat and mass transfer, thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, and numerical modelling is mandatory.
  • Hands‑on experience with Molecular Dynamics tools such as LAMMPS, GROMACS, NAMD, OpenMM, or comparable software are mandatory.
  • Practical experience with industrial CFD tools such as STAR-CCM+, ANSYS Fluent/CFX, COMSOL Multiphysics, OpenFOAM, or similar.
  • Ability to read and critically assess academic literature and translate useful modelling approaches into reliable simulation workflows.
  • Experience with multiphase flows, reacting flows, diffusion, adsorption, interfacial phenomena, surface chemistry, rarefied regimes, or particle-laden transport.
  • Scripting or software skills, ideally Python, MATLAB, C++, or similar, for automation, data processing, model development, and workflow improvement.
  • Rigorous problem‑solving ability, high attention to detail, curiosity, and a pragmatic engineering mindset focused on reliable industrial value.
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to explain complex physical and chemical modelling topics to specialists and non‑specialists.
  • Good communication skills in English. German is highly valuable for customer interaction and integration into the DACH market.

Nice to have

  • Experience with surface chemistry, plasma‑surface interaction, CVD, etching, semiconductor processes, catalysis, membranes, porous media, or electrochemical systems.
  • Knowledge of DSMC, LBM, rarefied gas dynamics, kinetic theory, multiscale modelling, 1D/system modelling, or AI/ML‑enabled engineering workflows.
  • Experience in consultancy, industrial R&D, OEM development, or customer‑facing technical project work.

What we offer

  • Technically demanding projects with direct industrial relevance.
  • The opportunity to shape advanced CFD, MD, and multiscale simulation methodologies in a growing Hamburg team.
  • A strong European expert network with more than 180 CAE engineers across multiple offices.
  • Collaboration with specialists in CFD, FEA, plasma simulation, system modelling, and multiphysics workflows.
  • Competitive salary, targeted training, flexible working time arrangements, and additional company benefits.
  • An international engineering environment with room to grow technically, methodologically, and professionally.
