For the Communications and Information Center (kiz), Infrastructure Department, we are seeking a

Team Leader for Network and Telecommunications (m/f/d)

With approximately 140 employees, the kiz is the second-largest central unit at the University of Ulm and provides services in the areas of library, information technology, and media for research, teaching, student affairs, and administration.

The Infrastructure Department is responsible for the entire network infrastructure, the provision of basic IT equipment, a high-performance computing cluster, and other system-related services provided by a modern IT center.

Your Profile:

• Completed academic degree from a university (Diploma, Master’s) or college (Master’s) in computer science, as well as several years of relevant professional experience
• Solid and broad-based IT expertise to derive strategic and operational objectives for the university’s network operations
• In-depth knowledge of network architectures, protocols, and technologies (e.g., virtualization, switching, routing, OSI stack)
• Experience with network automation, monitoring, and modern deployment strategies (gitOps, DevOps)
• Excellent programming skills in scripting and programming languages such as Python, Perl, Go, or C, including version control and parallelization
• Proficiency with Linux/Unix systems, virtualization solutions, and tools for troubleshooting and performance analysis
• Experience in IT project management, particularly in planning, steering, documentation, and communication for complex infrastructure projects
• Understanding of state-wide IT strategies (centralized resource pooling vs. thematic specialization) and the ability to apply these to the university context
• Leadership skills, ability to work in a team, ability to work independently, and strong communication and conflict resolution skills
• Very good German language skills (C2)

Your responsibilities:

• Strategic and operational leadership of the team, including goal setting, task management, personnel planning, and development
• Ensuring the stable, secure, and high-performance operation of the university network (Access, Core, Data Center, WLAN) as well as the telecommunications network and PIM systems
• Planning, design, and implementation of network projects and state-level initiatives, including budget responsibility, market analyses, and EU-wide tenders
• Evaluation of new technologies, definition of security objectives, and operation of university-wide firewalls
• Coordination of network-related services (e.g., DNS, DHCP, RADIUS, monitoring) and selection of suitable tools for a user-friendly network infrastructure
• Consulting and second-level support for research, teaching, and administration, as well as training and knowledge transfer within the university
• Analysis of threat situations and derivation of appropriate security measures to ensure highly available network operations
