Optical Metrologist

Language: Fluent German (C1/C2) is essential and English

We are supporting a global leader in precision measurement technology that develops advanced optical inspection and metrology systems for high-accuracy industrial applications. Due to increased project demand, we are seeking an experienced Optical Metrology Engineer to join the engineering team on an initial 12-month freelance contract.

This role is ideal for engineers currently working with optical coordinate measuring systems, structured light scanners, laser scanners, multisensor metrology, precision inspection equipment or automated measurement solutions.

The Role

You will play a key role in the development, optimisation and validation of advanced optical metrology systems used for high-precision dimensional inspection and quality assurance across a wide range of manufacturing industries.

Working alongside specialists in optics, software, mechanics and automation, you'll help develop next-generation measurement technologies that deliver exceptional accuracy and repeatability.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and optimise advanced optical metrology and measurement systems.
• Evaluate and improve the performance of optical sensors, cameras and laser-based measurement technologies.
• Design and execute measurement validation and system calibration procedures.
• Analyse measurement uncertainty, repeatability and system accuracy.
• Support optical alignment and integration of precision measurement hardware.
• Work with structured light, laser scanning and optical imaging technologies.
• Develop testing methodologies for new metrology products.
• Support prototype development and product verification.
• Collaborate closely with software, optics and mechanical engineering teams.
• Produce technical documentation, validation reports and engineering specifications.
• Degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Strong background in optical metrology , dimensional measurement or precision inspection systems.
• Experience with one or more of the following:
• Structured light scanning
• Laser scanning
• Optical coordinate measurement (Optical CMM)
• Machine vision
• 3D optical surface measurement
• White light interferometry
• Experience calibrating and validating precision measurement equipment.
• Strong understanding of GD&T, geometric tolerancing and dimensional inspection principles.
• Experience working within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
• Fluent German (minimum C1 level) is essential. You must be comfortable communicating with engineering teams, participating in technical discussions and producing documentation in German.

Highly Desirable Experience

Candidates with experience from companies specialising in precision metrology, industrial measurement, optical inspection or coordinate measuring systems will be particularly well suited.
