For our Engineering Center in Mainz, we are looking for a Patent Specialist (m/f/d) on a permanent basis and at the earliest possible start date.

Reporting directly to senior management, you will serve as the central point of contact for all patent-related matters across our international research and development sites. Working independently and in close collaboration with inventors, R&D teams, and external patent attorneys, you will be responsible for protecting and developing our global patent portfolio. This role offers significant scope for initiative and the opportunity to make a direct impact.

Responsibilities

  • Drafting, filing, and managing patent applications in cooperation with external patent law firms
  • Providing IP counseling and support to international R&D teams across multiple development sites
  • Conducting patentability assessments, freedom-to-operate analyses, and prior art searches
  • Monitoring competitor patent activity and deriving strategic recommendations
  • Managing the patent portfolio lifecycle, including decisions on maintenance and renewals
  • Maintaining and administering the patent portfolio, including deadlines, fees, and official correspondence
  • Supporting R&D teams in identifying and documenting inventions
  • Coordinating with internal stakeholders (R&D, Legal, Business Units) across international locations
  • Preparing and presenting IP reports and analyses for management

Qualifications

  • Degree in engineering, natural sciences, physics, or a comparable qualification
  • An additional qualification in patent law (e.g., postgraduate studies in patent law) is an advantage
  • Experience in drafting and prosecuting patent applications, ideally gained in a patent law firm or within an industrial company
  • Fluent in German and English
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills for working with international teams
  • Proficiency in standard MS Office applications and common business software, combined with an open-minded approach to adopting and implementing new digital tools
  • Willingness to travel to international R&D sites as needed
