PhD student (m/f/d) in Precision Frequency-Comb Spectroscopy

Stellenbeschreibung:

Job profile:

The successful candidate will develop and apply dual‑comb spectroscopy for broadband precision spectroscopy. The research combines the development of advanced laser‑based instrumentation with experimental investigations and quantitative data analysis. Responsibilities include the design, implementation and optimisation of optical experiments, the operation and further development of state‑of‑the‑art frequency‑comb systems, the acquisition and analysis of spectroscopic data, and the interpretation of experimental results. The project offers the opportunity to contribute to the development of novel spectroscopic methods while working in a highly international and interdisciplinary research environment in collaboration with leading research groups. The research will be carried out with the aim of completing a doctoral thesis in physics.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Physics or a closely related field.
  • Solid background in optics, laser physics and experimental physics.
  • Experience with scientific programming (e.g. Python and/or C++) for data acquisition and analysis.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Desirable experiences:
    • First experiences with frequency‑comb spectroscopy, Fourier‑transform spectroscopy or dual‑comb spectroscopy are beneficial
    • Experience with femtosecond laser systems, heterodyne detection, optical beat‑note measurements or laser frequency stabilization
    • Numerical analysis of spectroscopic data, including Fourier transforms
    • Spectral phase retrieval and experience with Gaussian beam propagation and optical design.
    • Hands‑on experience with optical alignment of free‑space setups and manipulation of optical fibres is beneficial.
  • Generally open to collaborate with international research partners and to undertake short research visits abroad.

Offer

The position is available from 1 October 2026 and is initially limited to 3 years. Payment will be according to the German TVöD Bund salary scheme (E13, 75%).
