GFZ is Germany's national centre for solid Earth research. We advance the understanding of dynamic processes to address global challenges, from mitigating the impacts of natural hazards and sustaining our habitat amid global change to responsibly managing georesources. We are part of the Helmholtz Association, the largest German scientific organisation. With around 1,200 employees as well as ca. 500 guest researchers, we contribute to the Helmholtz Research Field Earth and Environment, aligning cutting‑edge research with societal relevance and international collaboration. Our work integrates multidisciplinary studies across Earth's system components, leveraging advanced technologies and infrastructure to research solutions and to transfer our knowledge to society.
Artificial intelligence (AI) methods, particularly generative AI, have the potential to significantly advance and transform Earth System Sciences (ESS), especially given the complexity of the Earth system as a dynamic system of interacting components. Generative AI enables the identification of general structures across a wide range of problems, which can be addressed to specific tasks in subsequent research questions. “GenAI4Earth” will go beyond the state‑of‑the‑art by designing, deploying, and operating trustworthy, reusable GenAI services within the EOSC ecosystem, built on FAIR data, models, and workflows. The goal of this position is to develop data‑driven approaches to AI‑supported analysis for applications in ESS as part of the EU project “GenAI4Earth.” To this end, current developments in the field of AI (e.g., Edge AI, Sustainable AI, Agentic AI) will be addressed and translated into concrete application scenarios.
