Goethe University Frankfurt am Main invites applications for the position of Professor of Human Geography (W3) with a focus on Geographies of Planetary Transformation in the Institute of Human Geography at the Faculty of Geosciences and Geography. Professorship Profile

The Department of Human Geography at Goethe University Frankfurt is developing a new research agenda on Geographies of Planetary Transformation that seeks to address the upheavals of the present following the global age (ecological crises, geo-economic restructurings, social inequalities, digitalisation and artificial intelligence, authoritarian drift). Geographies of planetary transformation serve as a response to these upheavals, investigating the spatial reorganisation of the world by challenging prevailing anthropocentric and Eurocentric epistemologies, thereby reconfiguring understandings of the relationships between space and nature, society and technology.

Your Profile

We are looking for internationally recognized applicants with a proven track record in research and teaching who will further develop a post-anthropocentric understanding of geography. An interdisciplinary research profile is expected as well as a research approach that combines the social and more-than-human dimensions in the co-production of geographies. Research and teaching should demonstrate an interest in the performativity of old and new epistemologies, as well as their respective forms of knowledge, practices, and ethics. Research in the institute’s focus area of human-nature relationships is desirable. Projects related to human geography of earth system sciences as well as knowledge of science and technology studies are an advantage. The task of the professorship is also to establish an active, nationally and internationally networked working group on geographies of planetary transformation in close cooperation with colleagues in the Frankfurt Department of Human Geography.
