REGISTERED NURSE - Pain Clinic/Surgery - PRN

Position Summary

Rendering leadership and safe, quality nursing care of patients during surgical and clinical intervention, in support of medical care as directed by Medical Staff and pursuant to objectives, goals, policies, and philosophy of the nursing department and hospital. Accountable for assessing, planning, implementing and coordinating patient care from admission to discharge.

Role Qualifications

Education

• Graduate of accredited school of professional nursing

Experience

• Operating Room experience preferred, but not required.

Licenses / Certificate

• Current Missouri State Registration
• Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS)
• Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) preferred, but not required.

Position Responsibilities

• Assesses patient status on admission to the preop area, the operating room and/or the recovery room and on a continuing basis.
• Ensures provision of patient care in a cost‑effective, organized, and timely manner.
• Communicates appropriate information regarding patient conditions to those who require the information including surgeons, anesthesia, management, and other staff while maintaining confidentiality according to hospital policy.
• Safely carries out physician’s orders correctly and promptly, documenting all activities.
• Initiates and participates in patient and family education. Assesses learning needs according to patient’s level of understanding and readiness to learn.
• Coordinates preoperative care by preparing the patient for surgery: vital signs, consents, IV access, nursing history and physical, preop meds, and other duties as assigned.
• Accountable for nursing care as defined by the hospital, the nursing department, and the operating room policies to include the comfort and well being of the patient.
• Observes, records, and reports to physicians and anesthesia provider the patient’s condition, reaction to the medication, treatment and significant incidents.
• Acts as circulating nurse for operative procedures, following all departmental policies and procedures for this activity.
• Acts as recovery nurse of PACU patients, following departmental policies and procedures for the activity.
• Always conducts oneself so as to reflect credit on one’s profession and the hospital.
• Assists all operating room personnel with completion of duties as needed.
• Demonstrates leadership abilities, directing other team members and cooperatively working with peer group to provide high quality care.
• Maintain adequate supplies, reorders and restocks as necessary, and assist with inventory.
• Coordinates and performs all duties in pain clinic in accordance with physician’s orders and hospital protocols.
• Maintain clinical competency in preop/surgical/PACU skills.
• Maintains an acceptable attendance record in accordance with policy, providing proper notification for absences or tardiness.
• Ability to flex hours as needed as requested by supervisor.
• Attend department staff meetings.
• Assists in the orientation process of new personnel.
• Assist in the duties of Central Sterile as needed.
• Performs outdates of medications/supplies.
• Knowledge of all equipment used in PREOP/OR/PACU/ PAIN CLINIC.
• Expertise in safety principles, asepsis, sterile technique and universal precautions.
• May be required to do other related duties for which the individual is qualified.

• Ability to stand for long periods of time in OR suites which are very cool, withstand unpleasant smells, sounds, and sites knowing that breaks are variable in timing.

Reporting To

Direct supervision of one to three LPN’s or Scrub Technicians in the operating room
