Overview

The inpatient Child Psychiatric Unit is a 12‑bed unit. It is a short‑term child‑oriented program designed to provide crisis intervention and stabilization to children ages 3‑13. The average length of stay is three to seven days. Each patient receives an initial psychiatric evaluation on admission and may undergo additional psychological and medical evaluations as needed.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to Magnet re‑designation by updating professional profiles and initiating council involvement, committees, task forces, or community outreach.
• Demonstrate critical thinking and problem‑solving during patient care.
• Communicate and develop plans of care, advocating for patients’ needs.
• Initiate escalation of issues through the chain of command.
• Use current hand‑off processes correctly.
• Maintain collegial and respectful relationships with ancillary staff.
• Participate in implementing change and supporting management decisions.
• Model empathy, concern, and a desire to help others.
• Maintain regulatory requirements such as licensing and BLS.
• Plan for mandatory education and professional activities to enhance nursing practice.
• Review peers through timely participation in evaluations.
• Collaborate with the healthcare team and model professional behavior and teamwork.
• Utilize resources appropriately and know when to engage the next level of care.
• Gather assessment data from patients and families to complete data bases and plans of care within identified timeframes.
• Demonstrate clinical skills with complex patients and appropriate interventions.
• Prioritize and organize care for complex patients with rapidly changing needs.
• Maintain documentation that meets highest standards of practice.
• Plan educational needs with patients and families during the stay and prior to discharge.
• Show caring in all encounters with patients and families, reflected in feedback and satisfaction scores.
• Speak up when team members exhibit unsafe behavior or performance.
• Continuously validate and verify information for decision making or documentation.
• Stop and take time to resolve uncertainty when it arises.
• Communicate accurately, clearly, and promptly verbally and in writing.
• Promote safety for patients, families, visitors, and coworkers.
• Practice attention to important details, using Stop, Think, Act, and Review to self‑check behavior and performance.

Qualifications

• BSN from an approved nursing program (preferred).
• Minimum of 1 year RN experience.
• Registered Nurse licensed in the District of Columbia, Maryland, or Virginia, depending on location.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) and Cardio‑Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
• Knowledge of legal scope of practice, national and specialty nursing standards, and Children’s National policies and procedures.
• Ability to keep knowledge base current with new information or changes in specialty area.
