The Neurophysiology research group investigates the neural basis of hearing and communication in mice and other small mammals (e.g., naked mole-rats). Using electrophysiological, behavioural, and anatomical/molecular biological techniques, we study the function of brain structures involved in the processing of complex acoustic signals. A further focus is on acoustic communication in these animals across different behavioural contexts. We are particularly interested in changes in brain function and behaviour in mice with Fragile X syndrome, a form of autism spectrum disorder. These animals, similar to affected humans, exhibit increased auditory sensitivity as well as impairments in acoustic communication. In addition, the research group is involved in the coordination and teaching of courses in animal physiology (BSc) and neurobiology (MSc). A particular priority is the support and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds.
