Robotics Controls Engineer, Geartrain Manufacturing, Optimus

Optimus geartrain manufacturing team is seeking a skilled and highly motivated equipment control engineer with high precision equipment build experience within gearbox, electric motor or other rotating machinery industries. The role focuses on developing and supporting manufacturing equipment that enables volume production of gearboxes, collaborating with Design, Quality, Production, Sustaining, Automation, and Supply Chain teams throughout the product lifecycle.

The ideal candidate takes pride in engineering and physics fundamentals, has hands-on manufacturing equipment and process development experience, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and demonstrates strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in initial equipment conceptual development, balancing product specifications, process control requirements, layout complexity, cost, quality, and lead-time limits
  • Implement reliable safety systems (e.g., ANSI/RIA 15.06 and OSHA compliant) for safeguarding robots, gantries, conveyors, and other high-volume manufacturing equipment
  • Architect, write, and debug PLC logic with emphasis on code organization, documentation, maintainability, and reusability
  • Architect, write, and debug programs for subsystems such as robots, vision systems, test equipment, and manufacturing execution systems
  • Participate in Tesla specification and standard creation, release to vendors, and technical evaluation
  • Select and size electrical and electromechanical components
  • Generate simple, informative HMI screens for complex machinery to aid troubleshooting
  • Lay out new industrial electrical control panels compliant with NFPA 79, NEC, and UL 508A; create electrical, pneumatic, and fluid schematics
  • Manage electrical cabinet builds, field wiring, pneumatic, and fluid plumbing
  • Introduce automated processes into production and train maintenance and production teams to support after deployment

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in standard and safety PLC programming (e.g., Siemens TIA Portal, Allen-Bradley Studio 5000, Beckhoff TwinCAT 3)
  • Proficiency in script-based programming (e.g., Python, Go, SQL)
  • Proficiency in robot programming (e.g., Fanuc, Kuka, ABB)
  • Proficiency in servo system commissioning (e.g., Siemens SIMATIC, Rockwell Kinetix, Beckhoff Drive Manager 2)
  • Proficiency in 2D/3D vision system programming (e.g., Keyence XGX, Cognex Insight, LMI Gocator)
  • In-depth knowledge of equipment safety standards (e.g., ANSI/RIA 15.06, OSHA compliant) and electrical standards (e.g., NFPA 79, NEC, UL 508A)
  • Degree in Mechatronics or related field, or equivalent experience
  • Ability to communicate professionally in English (verbal and written)
  • Ability to travel internationally on a regular basis
