Senior Back End Engineer – DE Tech

Hybrid in London / Remote within the UK.

We’re looking for a Senior Back End Engineer to build the systems that power iwoca’s German business. You’ll join a cross‑functional engineering team focused on the German market and own high‑impact projects from concept to delivery.

Responsibilities

• Simplify workflows: decide when and what to automate, translating operational needs into reliable code that reduces manual effort.
• Evolve the architecture: identify ways to modernise systems, managing trade‑offs to keep them dependable as they scale.
• Advocate for quality: act as a sounding board, using code reviews and design sessions to promote better engineering practices.
• Expand your scope: lead projects end‑to‑end and develop commercial judgement.

Qualifications

Essential

• Proven track record in designing and building backend systems using Python, ideally Django, open to FastAPI, Flask, Ninja.
• Experience with relational databases, preferably PostgreSQL, or MySQL, including performance and maintainability considerations.
• Experience building systems that support complex workflows where data correctness and clear system behaviour matter.
• Track record of taking work from problem to delivery, shaping solutions, making trade‑offs, and iterating based on usage.
• Drive to continually improve existing systems, not just building new ones, simplifying pain points.
• Use AI tools (e.g., Cursor or Claude Code) in daily flow to accelerate boilerplate and research.

Bonus

• Knowledge of scaling systems, familiarity with internal tools or platforms used by large operational teams.
• Full‑stack flexibility: contributing to front‑end codebases, e.g., React or TypeScript.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines or deployment workflows.
• Data‑driven mindset: use metrics to assess impact of changes.

Compensation

£80,000–£100,000 per annum, plus salary goals discussion.
