Senior Database Administrator MSSQL

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Database Administrator MSSQL based in Canada.

This role sits at the core of a global database operations function responsible for ensuring the stability, performance, and security of large-scale Microsoft SQL Server environments. You will support both on-premises and cloud-based infrastructures, contributing to critical systems that enable business operations across multiple regions. The position combines hands‑on technical administration with strategic input into performance tuning, high availability design, and disaster recovery planning. You will collaborate closely with development, infrastructure, and application teams to support deployments, migrations, and ongoing optimization. This is a high-impact environment where reliability, precision, and proactive problem‑solving are essential. You will also play a key role in incident response and after‑hours support rotation to maintain continuous service availability.

Accountabilities:

• Manage, configure, and support Microsoft SQL Server environments across on‑premises and cloud platforms, ensuring optimal performance, availability, and security.
• Execute database installations, upgrades, patching, migrations, and lifecycle maintenance activities in alignment with best practices and change management processes.
• Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize database performance, including indexing, query tuning, capacity planning, and resource utilization.
• Support high availability and disaster recovery solutions, including backup/recovery processes, failover/failback operations, and replication strategies.
• Collaborate with development and infrastructure teams to support deployments, data fixes, and production releases.
• Implement and maintain database security standards, including encryption, access controls, and vulnerability remediation.
• Provide operational support for incidents, alerts, and scheduled maintenance, including participation in on‑call rotation.

Requirements:

This role requires a seasoned MSSQL Database Administrator with strong technical expertise in enterprise environments and a solid understanding of both cloud and on‑prem database ecosystems. Candidates should bring hands‑on experience supporting mission‑critical systems and collaborating across technical teams.

• 5+ years of progressive experience as a Microsoft SQL Server Database Administrator.
• Strong expertise in SQL Server (2016–2022) and Windows Server environments.
• Experience with cloud database platforms such as Azure and/or Google Cloud (e.g., Azure MI, GCP Cloud SQL).
• Solid understanding of HA/DR solutions (Always‑On Availability Groups, replication, backup/recovery strategies).
• Strong knowledge of performance tuning, indexing strategies, and database optimization techniques.
• Experience with database security practices including encryption (TDE, TLS) and access management.
• Proficiency in scripting and automation using T‑SQL, PowerShell, or similar tools.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and incident management skills with a detail‑oriented mindset.
• Post‑secondary education in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (certifications in Microsoft/Azure preferred).
