Senior Energy Systems Engineer — BESS Optimization & Production (Berlin)

We're FIDgate — a Berlin-based climate‑tech startup building a decision platform for renewable energy infrastructure.

Our platform combines techno‑economic optimisation, energy systems modelling, financial analysis, and AI‑assisted workflows for solar PV, wind, and battery energy storage projects.

We're backed by a major German EXIST startup programme and currently transitioning from pilot execution to scalable productisation.

The Role

We're looking for a Senior Energy Systems Engineer who sits at the intersection of two worlds that rarely overlap cleanly:

  • Deep energy domain knowledge — you understand how BESS projects make money. Dispatch optimisation, multi‑market participation (capacity, energy, ancillary services), degradation modelling, PPA vs merchant vs tolling structures, and what drives IRR in a real infrastructure investment decision.
  • Production software engineering — you’re comfortable moving from mathematical models and research prototypes into robust production systems.

This is the role for someone who has spent years at an energy software company, a BESS developer, a trading desk, or an optimisation tool provider — and wants to build something from scratch with real ownership.

What You Will Own

  • Design and implement optimisation models for BESS, solar PV, wind, and hybrid projects
  • Build and maintain the Core v2 optimisation engine — the technical heart of the platform
  • Work directly with our Scientific Lead to translate mathematical models into production‑grade Python
  • Define the API contract between the optimisation engine and the external‑facing SDK
  • Design multi‑scenario pipelines — capacity optimisation, dispatch simulation, financial analysis
  • Contribute to the AI‑assisted modelling layer — using LLMs to make complex optimisation outputs interpretable and actionable for non‑technical stakeholders
  • Participate in technical conversations with clients and investors — you will be client‑facing

What You Probably Know

Energy domain: BESS dispatch optimisation · Multi‑market participation (DA, ID, FCR, aFRR, mFRR) · Degradation modelling · Revenue stacking · PPA / merchant / tolling structures · IRR / NPV / LCOE / DSCR · Capacity market mechanics · Solar PV yield modelling · Hybrid asset optimisation

Technical: Python (production, not just notebooks) · Optimisation frameworks (Pyomo, Gurobi, OR‑Tools, CPLEX or equivalent) · MILP / stochastic optimisation · Scientific computing (numpy, scipy, pandas) · Clean architecture principles · API design · Testing for numerical systems

This Role Is Probably NOT a Fit If You

  • Work purely in Excel or research notebooks and have never shipped production code
  • Have strong optimisation theory but no energy domain experience
  • Are not comfortable being client‑facing and communicating complex technical concepts in English
  • Prefer a large structured environment over early‑stage ambiguity and ownership

Why This Is an Interesting Problem

Energy optimisation is genuinely hard. Multi‑market BESS dispatch with degradation, financial structuring constraints, and investor‑grade output reporting is not a solved problem—especially at the intersection of real assets and programmable APIs.

We're building the platform that lets energy developers, investors, and infrastructure stakeholders run these decisions programmatically—replacing Excel models and static assumptions with real‑time, scenario‑aware optimisation.

If you’ve worked on this problem from the inside at a BESS developer, a trading platform, or an optimisation software company, you already know why this matters.

  • Berlin‑based required — EXIST programme requires physical presence in Berlin
  • EXIST eligibility — candidates must have obtained their most recent degree (BSc or MSc) within the last 5 years
