About the Role

The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer – HSE, Serviceability and T&I Integration is a senior technical contributor within the European Business & Engineering Center responsible for optimising the MySE onshore and offshore wind turbine product for European Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) compliance, Major Component Replacement (MCR) capability and Transport & Installation (T&I) performance. The role uses 3D CAD (primarily SolidWorks) to analyse the existing design, produce concept studies, and mark up design changes that are then executed by the detailed design teams at MySE R&D headquarters in Zhongshan (China). The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer acts as the European technical interface for HSE-by-design and Design-for-Serviceability topics, working closely with HQ engineering, with the European Transport & Installation and Service clusters, and with customers, service providers and notified bodies. The role is central to ensuring that MySE turbines can be safely installed, operated, and maintained across its entire operational lifetime, including economically viable replacement of major components.

Responsibilities

3D Modelling and Design Analysis

  • Build, maintain and analyse 3D CAD models (primarily SolidWorks) of nacelle, hub, tower-top, platforms, access routes, internal lifting arrangements and major component interfaces.
  • Produce concept studies, design variants, markups and detailed annotations that can be handed over to the detailed design teams in Zhongshan for execution.
  • Perform clearance, envelope, accessibility and reach studies (tools, personnel, components, manbaskets) including scenarios for component exchange up‑tower.
  • Support interface management between nacelle, drivetrain, hub, tower, yaw, pitch and auxiliary systems from a serviceability and installability perspective.
  • Ensure data exchange discipline with HQ on CAD, STEP, 3D PDF and PDM/PLM formats; propose improvements where interoperability gaps emerge.

Major Component Replacement (MCR) Capability

  • Drive optimisation of the MySE platform for safe, fast and economical Major Component Replacement over the asset lifetime, covering gearbox (if applicable), generator, main bearing, main shaft, converter modules, transformer, pitch drives, yaw drives, blades and hub‑level components.
  • Define and evaluate up‑tower MCR strategies versus full nacelle exchange versus component‑level exchange, and specify the design features required to enable the preferred strategy (split lines, lifting points, jacking features, temporary supports, rail and trolley systems, nacelle openings).
  • Specify internal service cranes, hoists, monorails, winches and rigging interfaces to support MCR activities safely and efficiently.
  • Quantify MCR duration, crane class, vessel class and cost envelopes for each major component, and use these to drive design trade‑off decisions with HQ.
  • Engage with the European Service cluster and with specialist MCR service providers to capture current best practice and feed it into design improvements.

HSE-by-Design and Compliance Optimisation

  • Drive HSE-by-design optimisation of the MySE platform to meet European workplace and machinery safety legislation, including the Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230, the Work at Height Directive, CDM Regulations (UK), national HSE equivalents, and applicable DNV and class society HSE requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant IEC/ISO standards for wind turbine personal safety, including access, egress, platforms, guardrails, ladders, fall arrest, rescue, lifting equipment and confined space provisions.
  • Identify HSE risks in the existing design via structured risk assessment (task‑based, component‑based, installation‑phase and O&M‑phase) and drive design‑out solutions in cooperation with HQ.
  • Represent HSE topics in design reviews, FMEAs and incident investigations; contribute to the European technical risk register.
  • Support customer, notified body and insurer audits of HSE design features.

Transport and Installation Support

  • Provide T&I‑relevant design input to the platform, including lifting point design, lifting arrangements, rigging interfaces, transport frames, seafastening interfaces and pre‑assembly strategies.
  • Provide technical input on mass, centre of gravity, lifting height, outreach, ground bearing pressure and deck load for all major components (tower sections, nacelle, hub, blades).
  • Support T&I method development (single blade install, bunny ear, pre‑assembled rotor, offshore feeder solutions) with CAD‑based feasibility studies.
  • Interface with the European Transport & Installation cluster, installation contractors, vessel operators and crane suppliers to validate assumptions and capture lessons learned.

Serviceability and O&M Optimisation

  • Optimise routine O&M accessibility for scheduled and unscheduled maintenance tasks across the full service life.
  • Drive design of internal logistics (stair, lift, service cranes, hoists, tool storage) to minimise service time and risk.
  • Feed field service feedback and reliability data back into design improvement proposals.
  • Ensure that diagnostic, monitoring and bolted connection re‑tensioning activities can be performed safely and efficiently.

Coordination with R&D Headquarters (Zhongshan)

  • Act as the primary European counterpart to the mechanical design, serviceability and T&I engineering teams at MySE headquarters in Zhongshan.
  • Translate European HSE, MCR, T&I and customer requirements into structured input for the HQ engineering teams, using the established Technical Information Request process.
  • Hand over design markups, concept studies and analysis results to HQ for execution, and follow through to confirm correct implementation in the released design.
  • Travel to Zhongshan regularly for working sessions, design reviews and workshops.

Customer and External Stakeholder Interface

  • Act as the European technical interface to customers, service providers, installation contractors, vessel operators, crane suppliers and notified bodies on HSE, serviceability and T&I topics.
  • Support sales, project engineering and bid activities with HSE, MCR and T&I inputs, including lifting plans, access strategies and MCR feasibility statements.
  • Represent MySE confidently in customer technical clarifications, safety reviews and walkdowns.

Documentation, Standards and Continuous Improvement

  • Maintain European HSE, serviceability and T&I design guidelines, checklists and requirement libraries for the MySE platform.
  • Track evolution of European and international HSE and T&I standards and regulations, and reflect changes in design guidelines and proposals.
  • Contribute to the European technical documentation architecture, ensuring HSE, serviceability and T&I outputs are certification‑ready and audit‑ready.
  • Mentor more junior engineers and contribute to the wider R&D Europe organisation as a senior role model.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in mechanical design within the wind industry or adjacent heavy equipment industries (offshore oil and gas, heavy lifting, marine equipment).
  • Proven track record in HSE‑by‑design optimisation and in Major Component Replacement engineering for multi‑MW wind turbines, onshore and/or offshore. T&I engineering experience is a strong plus.
  • Hands‑on expertise in 3D CAD, primarily SolidWorks, including large assemblies, configurations and PDM workflows. Familiarity with additional CAD platforms (Creo, CATIA, NX) is an advantage.
  • Solid understanding of the service and MCR landscape, including up‑tower exchange methods, specialist MCR providers, component‑level lifting strategies and service crane design.
  • Working knowledge of European HSE legislation (Machinery Regulation, Work at Height, CDM and national equivalents) and of IEC/ISO standards relevant to wind turbine personal safety and lifting.
  • Experience working within a global OEM is highly sought after.
  • Experience working with Chinese OEMs or in a Europe‑China engineering context is a strong advantage.

Skills

  • Strong analytical and design judgment: able to identify the highest‑leverage HSE and MCR improvements in an existing design and express them clearly in CAD and in writing.
  • Excellent 3D spatial reasoning and the discipline required for large‑assembly CAD work.
  • Strong cross‑cultural competence; able to work effectively with Chinese engineering teams while meeting European HSE and serviceability expectations.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, including the ability to present design concepts to customers, service providers and auditors.
  • Ability to work independently, drive topics without direct line authority, and mobilise resources across functions and sites.
  • Highly structured, well organised, with strong documentation discipline.
  • Languages: English (fluent, working language) is required. German is an advantage. Mandarin Chinese is a significant advantage given the intensity of coordination with MySE headquarters.
  • Willingness to travel internationally (approximately 30 to 40 percent), including regular trips to Zhongshan, to European and international prototype, service and installation sites.
