This role serves as a subject matter expert for dimensional measurement methods, laboratory operations, measurement‑system deployment, and technical decision‑making within the Precision Connectivity Design Engineering team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the setup, operation, and continuous improvement of the Metrology Lab at the Corning Technology Center Berlin.
  • Coordinate day‑to‑day metrology lab activities, including workload prioritization, backlog follow‑up, equipment readiness, calibration, maintenance, vendor support, and safe laboratory practices.
  • Develop and promote metrology capability within OCS Technology by defining methods, standards, best practices, and technical guidance for dimensional measurement.
  • Support the qualification, deployment, and standardization of new metrology systems and measurement methods across development and manufacturing environments.
  • Provide second‑level support for deployed measurement systems, including troubleshooting related to measurement methods, system performance, repeatability, data quality, and equipment capability.
  • Partner with multidisciplinary project teams to design, evaluate, engineer, and build precision connectivity mechanical components for the telecommunications industry, from concept through delivery.
  • Communicate operational status, metrology metrics, budget needs, technical issues, risks, and improvement opportunities to leadership in a clear and actionable way.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, precision engineering, optical engineering, metrology, or a related technical field.
  • Significant professional experience in dimensional metrology, precision measurement, mechanical design, product development, manufacturing engineering, or a comparable engineering environment.
  • Strong understanding of measurement uncertainty, repeatability and reproducibility, gauge capability, calibration principles, and measurement‑system analysis.
  • Experience working with high‑precision components, tight tolerances, and engineering drawings in a product development or manufacturing context.
  • Ability to translate engineering requirements into reliable measurement strategies, inspection plans, and actionable technical recommendations.

Technical Skills

  • Advanced knowledge of dimensional measurement technologies such as CMM, optical measurement systems, vision systems, surface and form measurement, and precision inspection equipment.
  • Practical knowledge of GD&T, engineering drawings, tolerance analysis, datum strategies, and functional product definition.
  • Ability to define measurement methods, create inspection routines, analyze measurement data, and identify root causes of measurement variation.
  • Experience with metrology software, data analysis tools, reporting methods, and structured documentation of measurement results.
  • Knowledge of laboratory management practices, equipment qualification, calibration processes, maintenance planning, and supplier coordination.

Professional Skills

  • Strong ownership mindset with the ability to lead technical topics independently and drive them to completion.

  • Structured problem‑solving capability, with a practical approach to troubleshooting, prioritization, and decision‑making.
  • Ability to work effectively in cross‑functional and international teams, balancing technical depth with project execution needs.
  • Continuous‑improvement mindset and willingness to build new capabilities, processes, and standards in a growing technical environment.
  • Excellent English (spoken and written); German language skills is a plus.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting optical connectivity, telecommunications, precision mechanical assemblies, or other high‑precision product platforms.
  • Experience introducing new metrology equipment or measurement methods into engineering, laboratory, or manufacturing environments.
  • Familiarity with international quality and laboratory standards, structured problem‑solving methods, and statistical analysis of measurement data.
