ROLE: Technical Field Engineer, Robotics Integration & Deployment
COMPENSATION: Competitive Salary + Equity
TECHNE is supporting a rapidly growing European defence technology company in the search for a Technical Field Engineer to join its autonomy and deployment team.
The company builds modular Spatial AI and autonomy systems for unmanned platforms. Its technology helps drones navigate without GPS, understand and map their surroundings, coordinate across fleets, and operate in demanding real-world environments.
This role sits at the intersection of robotics, hardware integration, autonomy software, networking, field testing, and customer deployment.
You will own the final step between the engineering team and operational use. You will integrate the system onto partner platforms, test it in the field, diagnose failures, fix technical issues, and turn field findings into product improvements.
Key Responsibilities
- Integrate autonomy software, onboard computers, cameras, IMUs, radios, payloads, flight controllers, and ground stations
- Install and configure systems at test sites, customer locations, demonstrations, and operational exercises
- Diagnose faults across hardware, software, sensors, power, networking, calibration, and operator workflows
- Analyse flight logs, telemetry, system traces, and diagnostic data
- Configure and validate perception, localisation, mission logic, and autonomy behaviour
- Run acceptance tests, readiness checks, and release validation
- Flash devices, update configurations, and support software deployments
- Build scripts, diagnostic tools, dashboards, checklists, and deployment workflows
- Reproduce technical failures and identify the root cause
- Feed field findings back into hardware, software, and product development
- Support partner training and represent the engineering team during deployments
- Travel across Europe for testing and customer support
Required Experience
- Hands‑on experience integrating, testing, or troubleshooting complex robotic, automotive, embedded, aerospace, industrial, or defence systems
- Experience working across both hardware and software
- Strong knowledge of Linux systems, command‑line tools, logs, telemetry, configuration, and diagnostics
- Experience with sensors, onboard computers, networking, wiring, power systems, or embedded devices
- Strong debugging and root‑cause analysis skills
- Experience with system testing, commissioning, deployment, or validation
- Confidence working directly with customers, operators, and engineering teams
- Comfortable working with incomplete information in fast‑moving environments
- Driving licence
- Willingness to travel and work onsite
- Eligibility to work on defence‑related programmes
- ROS2, Docker, Linux, C++, Python, Bash, or Git
- PX4, ArduPilot, MAVLink, QGroundControl, or Mission Planner
- UAV, robotics, autonomous vehicle, or field application engineering
- WiFi, LTE, 5G, VPN, telemetry, radio, antenna, or RF troubleshooting
- Soldering, crimping, wiring harnesses, multimeters, oscilloscopes, or serial consoles
- Camera and IMU calibration, sensor synchronisation, localisation, mapping, navigation, or object detection
- Flight logs, robot logs, vibration analysis, thermal testing, or EMI and EMC testing
- Acceptance testing, deployment checklists, runbooks, and fleet diagnostics
The Why?
- Join during the transition from prototype development to large‑scale operational deployment
- Help build the field engineering function from an early stage
- Work across the full autonomy stack rather than one narrow technical area
- Take ownership of complex integration and deployment programmes
- Work closely with a highly technical founding and engineering team
- Shape the systems, tools, and processes used across future deployments
- Receive equity at an early stage of company growth
- Support technologies with direct relevance to European defence and security
This is not a traditional support role. It is a hands‑on engineering position for someone who enjoys making complex autonomous systems work outside the lab.
