Transmission Planning Engineer (Part-Time)

Duties

  • Lead or support technical scoping for new interconnection requests across transmission and distribution systems.
  • Review system data, interconnection standards, and utility and/or ISO/RTO requirements to inform project strategy.
  • Develop and maintain interconnection process reference guide for key markets, documenting processes, technical requirements, associated fees, and timelines for interconnection.
  • Coordinate with utilities to gather system information, validate assumptions, and align on study methodologies.
  • Work with engineering teams to develop technical drawings, one-lines, equipment specifications, and conceptual substation layouts.
  • Perform due diligence analysis including steady state power flow for early stage prospects and sensitivity scenarios.
  • Coordinate with consultants performing power flow studies and dynamic modeling.
  • Analyze study results and prepare summaries outlining required system upgrades, project impacts, and next steps.
  • Provide technical input into procurement processes for long-lead equipment (e.g., transformers, breakers, switchgear).
  • Work with engineering teams to refine cost estimates and schedules based on engineering scope and system upgrade requirements.
  • Interface with internal and external stakeholders to ensure technical accuracy and alignment across the project lifecycle.
  • Review and advise on client interconnection agreements including study agreements, engineering and procurement agreements, and energization and construction agreements to ensure alignment with project strategy.
  • Participate in market stakeholder discussions related to interconnection and grid performance for industry insights and relevance to client project strategy.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems focus preferred).
  • 3-7+ years of experience in transmission planning, utility engineering, or interconnection analysis.
  • Understanding of NERC standards, grid interconnection processes, and ISO/RTO and utility study practices.
  • Experience with modeling tools such as PSSE, PSLF, PSCAD, or PowerWorld is a plus.
  • Strong communication skills and comfort engaging with utility engineers and project stakeholders.
