Wildland Firefighter (Assistant Engine Captain)

Responsibilities

Serves as a lead wildland firefighter and member of a wildland fire engine crew, directing the work of a small crew of firefighters in building firelines, burnout, mopping up, and patrolling firelines.

Performs administrative lead duties, such as:

• timekeeping
• travel
• government credit card management
• maintaining records

Applies knowledge of firefighter safety, fire behavior, topography, weather, fuels, and fire management training.

Directs assigned suppression operations and recommends/implements tactical strategies.

Manages fuels projects, including:

• prescribed fire
• mechanical and biological treatments
• inventorying fuel beds
• piling vegetation debris

Qualifications

Must be a U.S. Citizen or National and eligible for Federal employment after background investigation.

Proof of education required; submit transcripts with grades, credit hours, major(s), GPA, institution name, and student name. Foreign education must be evaluated and deemed equivalent.

Must pass a drug test and be subject to random drug testing.

Must undergo a pre‑employment medical examination and may be subject to post‑employment examinations.

Must hold a valid state driver’s license; if a commercial driver’s license is required for the position, obtain it within 90 days of employment and submit the license and driving record.

Must complete a 1‑year probationary period.

Must be at least 18 years old and meet maximum age requirements.

Must be willing to work on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and shift work.

Must be able to travel up to 50% of the time during fire season.
