Quantum Application and Consulting Specialist (f/m/d)

Description

As part of the Quantum Computing and Technologies Department (QCT), you will help develop and provide quantum computing technologies for local and international advanced computing communities. QCT offers quantum simulators, remote access to quantum hardware, on‑premise quantum systems, development environment tools, scientific consultancy and education/training. The team focuses on integration pathways for quantum acceleration in next‑generation high‑performance computing (HPC) systems.

Your Role and Responsibilities

• Contribute to research and technical activities on integrating quantum computing into the HPC ecosystem for use cases in quantum simulations, optimisation, quantum machine learning and more.
• Act as a solution architect to support LRZ users in leveraging novel quantum services.
• Participate in research projects where LRZ is a partner and help forge new collaborations in quantum computing.
• Interface with multiple internal teams for joint projects and provide domain‑specific expertise at the intersection of quantum computing, HPC, AI/ML and data management.
• Support reporting of project progress, publish outcomes and address partner requests.

Basic Qualifications

• A PhD in natural sciences, computational science, physics, engineering, or mathematics.
• Good knowledge of quantum computing software and tools.
• Basic knowledge of an HPC environment and system software.
• Strong programming skills in a compiled language (C, C++, Fortran) or an interpreted language (Python, Julia, etc.).
• Excellent communication skills and a collaborative spirit.
• Very good oral presentation and writing skills in English; German proficiency desirable.
• Strong desire to contribute your education, experience and enthusiasm to a dynamic quantum computing team.

Preferred Qualifications

• Domain knowledge in computational biology, biophysics, biochemistry or related fields is useful for grant projects.
• Experience and interest in interacting with partners in grant projects and aligning activities with project milestones and deliverables.

Conditions

• Area – Quantum Computing and Technologies
• Working time – Full time (40 hrs); flexible working model with electronic time recording.
• Term of the contract – Two years, with further employment intended.
• Remuneration – Up to E 13, see Entgelttabelle TV‑L.
• Annual leave / compensatory time off – 30 days (24.12.+31.12. additional day off); over time is compensated by additional time off.
• Further trainings – Individual support for in‑service training and further education.
• Mobile work – Up to 60% of work time, when applicable.
