Intermediate Backend Engineer (Ruby), Plan: Project Management

As an Intermediate Backend Engineer, you will work on the Plan: Project Management team, contributing to scalable and high‑performing solutions for project planning workflows used by thousands of teams worldwide. You will collaborate with cross‑functional teams across multiple time zones, focusing on building and refining features, improving system performance, and delivering reliable solutions. This role provides the opportunity to influence key product decisions, implement innovative ideas, and work in a highly agile, iterative, and collaborative environment where continuous learning and efficiency are valued. You will also engage with the wider developer community, supporting open‑source contributions and fostering best practices across the platform.

Accountabilities

• Collaborate with product managers, UX designers, and engineers to define project requirements and break down work into manageable iterations
• Plan, execute, and deliver backend features, ensuring quality through testing and code reviews
• Develop Proofs of Concept for complex tasks and implement scalable solutions for high‑traffic applications
• Maintain and improve existing features, identifying technical debt and proposing solutions
• Support and mentor team members while advocating for engineering best practices
• Engage with contributors and the broader developer community to enhance open‑source participation
• Continuously suggest and implement process improvements to optimize team efficiency

Requirements

• Professional experience with Ruby on Rails and backend development
• Strong knowledge of PostgreSQL design and optimization
• Experience building and consuming REST APIs and GraphQL endpoints
• Familiarity with distributed, scalable, and reliable systems
• Proven ability to work effectively in highly agile and iterative environments
• Excellent communication skills for collaboration across diverse, global teams
• Self‑motivated, highly organized, and able to manage priorities independently
• Proficiency in English, both written and verbal. Nice‑to‑haves: Experience with Elasticsearch, NoSQL databases, CI/CD workflows, or prior open‑source contributions
