Postdoc / Senior Researcher in Computational Social Science – GESIS

GESIS – Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences is seeking a Postdoc / Senior Researcher in Computational Social Science for the Digital Society Observatory team, located in Köln, starting . The position is classified under the Entgeltgruppe 13 TV‑L, full‑time (100 %) and initially temporary for four years with the possibility of conversion to a permanent contract.

The Computational Social Science (CSS) department collects digital behaviour data and provides computer‑based methods for measuring and analysing such data for social‑scientific research. It supports scientists in integrating digital behaviour data into their research designs. The department’s research foci are the quality of digital behaviour data, the development and validation of computational social science methods, and the transformation of digital societies. The Digital Society Observatory specifically observes society using data from online platforms and conducts thematic and methodological research on digital society and the tools that can be used to investigate it.

Aufgabengebiet

  • Conduct research on digital behaviour data and computational social science.
  • Organise and further develop service tasks within the team, e.g. data collection from online platforms.
  • Assess the quality of digital behaviour data and advise on its use.
  • Present research results and GESIS offerings in relevant scientific communities.
  • Conceptualise and write grant proposals.

Ihr Profil

  • Scientific university degree (Diploma, Master or equivalent) and a (over‑average) completed PhD in a field relevant to computational social science (e.g. computer science, data science, communication science, political science, sociology).
  • Peer‑reviewed, internationally visible publications in computational social science.
  • Expertise in the collection, use and quality assessment of digital behaviour data.
  • Excellent knowledge of R and/or Python and, ideally, experience with databases.
  • Excellent written and spoken English skills; German language skills are not required initially but will be needed eventually.
